Is the CV dead?

Post by vanny »

Following a recent engine change, my assistant didnt bother to tighten up the intermediary joints on the long side drive shaft (BX16v). Found it when said relacement engine needed a head change, but had done a good 1000 miles on it! Oil seal was destroyed on the diff box.
Now when driving and on a full right hand lock there is a very loud routine thunk thunk thunk at the same speed as the road wheel rotation. Can i assume this is gonna be down to a goosed driveshaft?
Just another job to add to the naff rad and the stuffed turbo!

Sounds like it mate. I had a similar issue when going round roundabouts in my old Cavalier. Thump thump thump from the N/S driveshaft.
Replacing it required a big hammer and a huuuge length of pipe. Brutal job!

I agree that is sound like the CV has packed up. If you hear the noise when going in a straight line, be sure that it is time to repair, otherwise the car is dangerous!
