BX Steel Bonnet!

Post by mat_fenwick »

I saw this on ebay the other day http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 19011&rd=1 and was a little bit puzzled as I thought they all had plastic ones. I assumed the seller had made a mistake.
But whilst wandering round my local scrappy I saw a K reg diesel hatchback that also had a steel bonnet.
Is this an aftermarket fitting or did Citroen start fitting steel ones to be more mainstream? My estate is the same age and has a plastic one.

I seem to remember a discussion on this subject many years ago and from what I recall the conclusion was that the steel bonnet was used on some of the very late ones and consequently was also issued as spares - so if yours has had a prang - its plastic bonnet may have been replaced with steel.

I'm sure the BX Diesel I had some years ago had an aluminium bonnet.

the bx as far as im aware only ever had a plastic bonnet "diesel or petrol", that was its trade mark because of weight reduction and recycle properties, steel bonnet must be aftermarket "dont quote me on that" but never seen one with a steel bonnet.

Steel bonnets are fitted to the later builds, both my K plate TXD's have steel ones.

Yeah my K reg deisel is a metal bonnet one-think with a deisel the plastic ressonates at a certain frequency given out by deisel engines so metal was used for sound reduction reasons.

"Steel bonnets are fitted to the later builds"
My first BX RD19 - an A reg first registered in April 1984 - had a steel bonnet. I think the discussion several years ago on this topic decided that there was a shortage of plastic bonnets at the time and some were built with steel ones.

I think the very early basic spec 60bhp BX 1.4 (badged just as "BX" with no other letters/numbers) had steel bonnets as standard too.

Personally I've never seen a BX with a steel bonnet (either petrol or diesel) amongst the various BX's myself/family/friends have owned, but I'm told they do exist!
