There is a whining noise on my Xantia 1.8i N reg, now it goes up in pitch as a speed up but doesn't change with the revs , it is purely speed no how hard I press the accelerator!
Any ideas????
Andrew

hi,well went to citroen garage went out for a testdrive....with all his experience of citroen, dont know what it is...bloody great.still didnt charge me, if with hearing devise it would have been £40,but he has never had a problem like this, its not gearbox, driveshaft,or wheelbearings as ive done them ,he also said they,ve not done any!he was surprised i done them..anyway he said it could be tyres but there new and i didnt have noise for 3 weeks after i fitted them so im not convinced ..plus i swoped back to front diff tyres no change its got me.if you go route of bearings you,ve got to take hub off need a ball joint splitter and big socket and 3/4 drive and a big bar they are tight!not a hard job about an hour buy bearing got to go to a garage with a press its the only way but wont charge much only takes 20 mins about..so there you go ive just got to run it and see what happens.
I mentioned on another thread that I had a similar experience and it was tyres. In that instance it was on a CX but on a BX I had a situation where the tyres made a noise as though I had a flat on a certain type of road surface, about 400 metres long near where I live but a road I don't travel on often. Twice I stopped and inspected the tyres as they growled so loudly and I imagined I could feel a bit of sound transmission through the steering. When I changed tyres I also changed brands and never had the problem again.
The CX had an Asian brand of tyre that whined like a faulty bearing but the "flat tyre" syndrome was from a good quality Michelin. In both cases it was put down to tread pattern. It could easily be the tyres as it would take possibly 3 weeks of average driving in certain patterns to bed the tyre in enough for the problem to show. I wouldn't write the tyre off as the cause as I think it just could be.

Marco,
The fact that you have swapped back to front without success is one of the reasons I suspect this is your problem; same tyres still on the car even if they are in different places - been there - done that<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
The ideal siuation would be if you knew someone with a completely different brand & style of tyres and do a complete swap...say a set of Pirellis replacing Michelins. Out of curiosity, what brand & type of tyres do you have on the car? May be worth posting that in case others have the same sort & have a similar type of noise.
