Sounds to me like a pump problem, but maybe a slipping belt could cause this?

I did some checks on this last night, there does seem to be some air in the resevior. I've got a scrap 1995 Xantia 1.9 TD. The pump on that engine is on the bottom of the engine. On the 1998 Xantia 1.9 TD the pump is on the top are they the same pump and can I put the 1995 on the 1998 Xantia?

If you have air getting into the system the fault is confined to the reservoir-pump circuit and cannot get in elsewhere. The chances are its getting in through the hose between the reservoir to the pump and Anders suggestion is that you replace that hose with a section of clean garden hose for diagnostic purposes.

For what it's worth, I had a similar "jerky" sensation through the steering of my Xantia. I put hydraflush in on the weekend (and LHM all over the drive - anyone know how to get it off brickwork?!) and the steering is now smooth. Worth trying and it won't hurt all the other bits.
