1.9TD facelift , yesterday I took a long sweeping left hand bend at about 50mph and a loud knock came from somewhere underneath, it had a metallic resonant sound a bit like hitting the exhaust pipe with a rubber mallet. The car stayed under control and didn't do it again.
My wife said she has heard it before when she takes a very sharp left hander at a junction ( so only doing about 5mph ) on her way home from work. I checked exhaust mounts and they are all still there.
any ideas ?

sounds like the engine moving in relation to the exhaust pipe, and the sealing ring resisting this, until the stress is too great, and it "Jumps" to a new position. You might be able to verify this by grabbing hold of the (cold) exhaust pipe about 4' from the engine, and pressing it to one side. If you get the same noise, then that's what it is.
