I'd guess that it has 266mm front discs since it is a 1.8 (assuming it's a hatch) BUT my 97 TD is supposed to have the 266mm discs and it has 283mm instead i.e. the ones that the 2.0 16 valve hatch and estate Xantias (apart from the 2.0 Turbo, 2.1 TD, 110 HDI and V6) are supposed to have.
The easy way is to measure the diameter of the front discs, they can either be 266mm, 283mm or 288mm. Unlikely as it is, if you've got the 288mm discs there are 3 different types of pads that they can be used with, where as the smaller types only come with one pad size.
What brakes has my Xantia got?

Thats true in most cases, but it seems quite a few Xantias left the factory with bigger brake discs than they were "supposed" to have. When I last bought discs for my Xantia, GSF supplied the next size down because that's what the RP number for the car says its meant to have, but they didn't fit.
In the end I measured the discs the car had on already, GSF gave me a refund for the incorrect ones supplied earlier, and they worked out what part no. it should be based on the diameter measurement I'd taken.

Just wondering, mines got 266mm discs but is it possible to 'upgrade' to 283mm? What will have to change (other than the discs themselves), calipers? Is it worth doing? I've often thought when viewing discs (my TD has activa alloys fitted) that they look pretty sh**ty, calipers are rusted, discs are too small ... or should i be happy with my lot .. can i paint calipers?

You would certainly have to change the hub assembly. The hole in the 266mm disc centre is the wrong size to fit on the 283mm type hub & vice-versa.

You can easily change the whole lot yourself!
There is a french (home-made) doccument somewhere that explains it very well with pictures and all.
You can also get advice on the forum.
I dont know the url of the french guides, but if you email me I´ll gladly send them to you.
