Alternator??

Post by zzf00l »

My son's recently aquired 94 Xantia 1.9TD has a red battery warning light flickering on/off at revs below about 1500rpm...battery is new, alternator belt correctly tensioned, so suspect alternator but I am hoping it might just need new brushes, any comments would be helpful.
Cheers Ian

Yep, get the alternator tested I would say. I would guess at the brushes too.

I would agree with rossd, but you can check by connecting a voltmeter across the battery which should read about 14 volts with the engine ticking over, much less than this and you have a duff alternator.

If it reads about 10 or 11 volts its likely its a phase down - probably one or more rectfication diodes.
