2.1td belt broken - engine dead

Post by Thunderbird »

On a XM mk2 2.1td automatic, one of the belts blown, I believe it was the secondary belt we can see from above. Engine went dead. Strange noises point to severe damage inside the engine.
What is the typical consequences of a broken belt on this engine? Can one expect the main block and pistons to be ok?

Valves and a conrod or 2 will be gone, the cam may also have gone. you will probably find that there is a nice hole in the middle of one of the pistons.

Andy,
Do you believe it can be fixed? Or it will be better to sart thinking in a replacement engine?

Lift the head and if it looks really bad replace the engine, I hate to say it I would think its terminal as I’ve seen 2 of these with belts gone now and one ware it just jumped 2 teeth all 3 engines had broken con-rods, pistons and very bent valves one even had bits in the turbo from the engine!
If you want to know that its teminal very quickly unbolt the sump if its full of metal and chunks of piston replace the enigne :(

Lift the head on a 2.1 td? Have you tried it?! I have just done the gasket on mine and it would have been much easier if I had taken the engine out.

Why don't they make these bloody engines simpler?! [V]
You look at one of those old american petrol V8's and they look straight and simple!

i'm currently building a 2.1 activa, if you know how to get to all the bolts taking the head off isnt that bad (4hours ish) if you want to see worse look at a V6 or even the CT.

I've once had a 2.1 TD with a broken belt that "survived". Only a few of the levers that actuate the valves were broken. All 12 levers were replaced, a new cambelt installed and the engine did it again. It was a matter of 3 hours to repair the whole thing.

The engine survived - it seems the secondary belt after breaking got stuck on the belts' gears/teeth making them unaligned and the engine to stop. This was Citroen's explanation...
New belts and tensioners and it's running again! [:)]

If that was actually the case then you must be the luckiest person on the face of this planet. Normally when a belt slips this is far far worse than it snapping as you bend all the valves rather than just three. Someone was smiling on you that day!!!
