ZX DIY Service every year

Post by mezuk04 »

Got my car in July 04' and at that time booked it in and had a service including the belt change. I am doing min 450 miles to 500 a week. Me and Wilkobob (and friend) are overhauling the front discs and pads and rear shoes, nearside handbrake cable (noticed that when doing the offside cable) and both drop links, and if time the bulbs on the heater controls and an oil change..we do the oil change every 5000 miles.
Can you list any general things that need to be replaced or checked once a year and even things that need doing every so often..Also do a diesel filter change every 10000 miles (same time as oil change).
Want to keep the car tip-top condition and dont mind spending a bit of money.
Regards

Get several coats of wax on it - will protect the paintwork and dirt and salt will wash off very easily. Other than that I think you've got everything covered.

I get a lot of grief from Wilkobob and our mate David (the one with the fiesta's headgasket going, wilko posted about it) for not washing my car or cleaning inside...there have been two occasions where I have got as far as t-cutting but couldn't be bothered after about 8 minutes.
Thanks for the information....did a search for that info and its handy

Brake fluid - 2 yearly
Crack open the bleed nipples on the calipers and copper grease the threads - every year.
Coolant change - 2 yearly
I change the power steering fluid every 2 years on mine (turkey baster to suck as much of the old stuff out, then refill with new).
Gearbox oil (use the proper BV stuff) every 70K
Check for the underseal in the boot floor / behind the wheels for signs of cracking up every year.
All cheap and easy to do. The rest - you seem on top of.

Buy a cheapo pressure washer and give the underbody and arches a blast a couple of times during the winter, even if you don't wash the visible bits- it keeps the mud and salt monster at bay: it doesn't take long and its fun too!!
I don't know if Citroen had a batch of dodgy steel a'la the 86 escort, but some Saxo's have been having MOT failures on underbody corrosion.

I do an oil change every 5k but with most other things I usually wait until it goes wrong.
