BX/405 4x4's

Post by Ian Fearn »

Maybe i'm a little young but i seem to remember Peugeot doing a 405 MI16x4. I definatly know about the normal MI16 but can anybody recall the 4x4 version. That must have ripped the transfer box input shaft to bits in minutes!
I seem to remember being an impressionable 10 year old when somebody down my street had a 405GLx4. Must have been 1990ish?
I wonder if this was the same as the BX 4x4 in terms of the exhaust manifold and whether peugeot dealers may be able to help those people looking for exhausts?

Ian -
If you have become seriously addicted, you can use the Citroen ring to find a BX 4x4 club. They will know [;)]

The exhaust was surely different between 405 and BX, but the trtansmission parts were all the same as far as I know.
I think the duration of the input shaft depends of the kind of driver inside the car. An 18-year-old boy will surely kill this in a few thousand miles, but if you drive carefully (release the cluth slowly...) it could last very long.

I remember the Mi16x4, and have actually seen one. As for the exhaust I would think they are differant, but don't quote me on that.

While i appraciate that you mean hard and agressive driving, i resent the comment that an 18 year old boy if automatically a bad driver. I appreciate the stats speak for themselves and that young drivers to get into more crashes but young drivers also include 'girls' and regardless of what insurance companies say not every young driver is a ham fisted fool still learning to drive! After 4 years of learning to drive (ie after passing the 'test') i am still to destroy a car through bad driving, infact the only mark on my record is where a ford driver wrote his wing mirror off on the side of the car and decided that as i was a young driver then i would be easy prey. Him being on the worng side of the road resulted in the insurance company simply laughing there socks off!
So all in all, with 60000+ miles under the belt im doing pretty well! I'd also not be likely to 'kill' an Mi164x4 as i would cherish the ground it rolled on!

I know some one who has owned an Mi16 4x4 i also know someone who still owns a 405 T16 and vie owned 2 Bx 4x4's my self. People judge the transmission system too harshly, they may break but generally through hard use this is after 60,000 miles or 100,000KM the exhaust manifolds and down pipes are different on the Mi16 and BX 8v gti for obvious reasons. and if any one is thinking of buying one of these cars they need to buy a second one to pull for parts if they intend to have it for more than 5 years this will cover you for an exhaust, prop shaft and spare gearbox/front dif the rear diff is a torsion and as such is the same model used on a 205 T16 rally car I've never heard of one breaking.
one other thing, if you dump the clutch on any of these cars with out knowing what your doing the engine stalls so you eather get a good pull away or nothing at all, these cars dont really give you the option of spinning the wheels as there under powerd (the T16 being the exseption of cause).

yes but the down pipe is still diferent. :)
the exaust is diferent as it runs down the side of the prop and then ware the rear diff is is ware the silencer is on a normal BX that is the reason for the diferences.
I have 2 BX 4x4 exausts and one prop shaft if any one needs them, £30 for the lot!

Could you drop me an e-mail when you've found the bits. I'll need them broken them down into small enough pieces for me to collect in my BX. I can get them one evening, i live close to Burton upon trent so its not too far on a nice summers evening!
