Right ive managed to get the lid off with a bit of manouvering of all the bits inside. As im clearly going to find it near impossible to track down the right parts im litterally going to just replace the O ring thats in the groove- ill look for a slightly fatter one as the groove is about twice as wide as the current O ring thinkness and the O ring doesnt seem to be any higher out of the groove than the surrounding spindle. I expect its just worn and/or shrunk over the years and use. So providing I get a suitable size O ring (going to local deisel specialist now), and providing I havent disturbed the internal workings etc, then it should all be OK. Im just hoping I can figgure out how it all atatches again. Once it all put together I assume that its just a case of turning the spindle until the engine revs increase, then turning it back till it idles again and putting the throttle linkage on when its in this position. Thanks for your help everyone. Ive got my fingers crossed now.

Hi Adam, if it all goes pear shaped, then try to get another pump from the scrap yard, or advertise here under the 'for sale and wanted' section. [:)].
I don't know if this will help you but, the shaft on my pond pump got worn very badly in its plastic housing.. no repair available.. so I wrapped some PTFE tape round the shaft o take out the play, and its still running merrily four years later.. [:D]

Right ive put a new O ring in there and put it back together. Leakage has stopped but im not sure it running as it should. It might just be me being more concious and critical but there seems to be less low down torque and more power above 3000 RPM than before. I couldnt work out what position a few of the little levers were suppose to be in and they dont seem to attatch to anything on the outside. Well the one does and is actuated by a cable that I assume is part of some sort of vacuum mechanism. However, when i rev the engine from the engine bay this cable doesnt do anything anyway. Maybe it does something when the engine is under load? The other lever I really havent got a clue about attatches to nothing other than a spring on the outside of the unit towards the fron of the car. I dont know if this is set correctly as I just put it in the only position that allowed me to pop the cover back on. Im just hoping the emmisions will be OK- There is no visable smoke as such.

Well done!!
I think you may be talking about the manual stop lever.
Just push it to see if it stops the engine.
As to the running you would not have adjusted the mixture with what you have done, It'll be alright.
Now it's the cv boots..............

Hi Adam - the cable you're talking could be the about the cold start mechanism if it terminates at the thermostat housing or thereabouts. It incorporates a waxstat that provides higher revs or more fuel (can't remember which) until the engine has warmed up. As far as I know there are no vacuum devices on the Citroen version of the XUD engine. Congratulations on the DIY repair - diesel pumps are expensive new and a bit of a lottery secondhand.

Yeah just the driveshaft gaiters to go now! :-) Thanks again for all your help- Everyone is so quick to reply on here its amazing! Just hope the emmisions are going to be OK- Think ill refuel it and run it for a while so its got fresh fuel- Dont know whether that helps. They didnt do it last time due to unknown belt history but ive looked at it and it looks OK- Ill change it ASAP but the retest is tomorrow so ill have to chance it. Adam

well done, it seems that the oring idea does work!!! i'll be trying it on mine if it starts again. I beleive that maybe just nipping it up has made the biggest difference though as the actual seal is a brass bush so I am told...
alls well..[:D]

Yep I took it for a run out and no trace of a leak. All good. Hopefully it should be OK for the MOT- Looking forward to my 160 mile each way drive to Worcestershire tomorrow so I can fully experience the fuel ecconomy and my stereo that ive wired in professionally for a change! It sounds absolutely amazing- I only had TV speakers in my last BX but ive cut out the parcel shelf and done a perminant installation of some good speakers I bought off a mate ages ago- Didnt realise the CD player was that good! Think the large boot area helps. Its brilliant- you can have it at a comfortable volume and you cant hear the engine at all.

Hi Tom. Yep the car is great cheers Tom- I took it to the midlands and back the other day and cruised at a constant 70 on the motorway and it has returned 54 MPG!! Basically on £50 it will go for about 600 miles and my old St Tropez would only do about 450 on that. I do drive it a bit slower than I did the 1.4 petrol but you do get massive fuel benefits whereas in the old car it didnt seem to make much difference as to how I drove it.
