Deisel Injector Pump spindle leaking

Post by adamskibx »

OK- I got my new BX 1.9 D- it failed the MOT on a few simple little things like headlamp adjustment but it also failed on a deisel leak from the injector pump spindle. I think thats what you call it anyway- The bit that alters the speed of the engine when the accelerator cable pulls it. It has dawned on me that I know nothing about deisels and my Haynes does not cover deisel models. Does anyone know if this is a quick simple fix or is it an expensive job? Cheers, Adam

Is the pump Luca (roto diesel) or Bosch? I know the lucas is an easy repair and cannot imagine the bosch one is much different, search this forum, someone had the same problem recently.

All I can tell from looking at it is that its made in Germany so I assume its a Bosch one. I did have a searrch on the forum but couldnt work out which problems were related.

Best thing is to locate your local diesel specialist and get a kit to repair it, usually a new spindle, bush and seal, usually cheap too.

Sorry to hear your problem Adam, at least the small failure items are easy and cheap.[:)]
As to the diesel leak, my BXTD had a leak recently which is documented on this forum.
My pump (Lucas Roto) had a leak on the cam belt end. I simply removed the pump and fitted a new oil seal on the spindle (cost £5).
Is this where it is leaking on yours? ie cam belt end?
I would also advise changing the cam belt at the same time.
Looking foward to your answer

Hi Bernie. The leak is coming from the spindle where the spring for the accelerator is- I removed the metal arm that the accererator cable attatches to, cleaned it all up, then ran the engine. The fuel seems to come out more when the engine is revved and also if you move the spindle about from side to side- Id imagine that its not suppose to have play in it like this which is probably another sign that its worn out and thats whats causing the leak. It looks like the brass colourd bush bearing is worn as that is what surrounds the spindle. The spindle also moves up and down if you push it in and pull it out but id imagine its suppose to be able to move like that. Im not sure if this part is called the spindle, I might be talking about something else. The spindle is where the MOT man thought it may be coming from but from what you say about whether or not its the cam end or not I think I might be talking about something else. Also, I dont think there is any oil in this part of the pump (its not really the pump its the thing on top I suppose, and there seems to be what looks like a fuel return pipe on it), so id imagine I need a fuel seel rather than an oil seel. Basically, if you turn the 'spindle'im talking about anti clockwise, the engine speed increases and when I put it all back together again I had to use a scredriver to keep the spindle in the right position while I tightened the nut that locks the spindle to the lever that the accelerator cable pulls. Sorry for the long winded description of this its the best I could do :-) The other MOT things are easy, just headlamp adjustment, new CV boot by each front wheel.

Its the throttle spindle, theres an O ring in there too, you might get away with renewing that in the short term but the kit is really cheap.

There's your answer Adam, as Stewart says a simple O ring is all that may be needed.
BTW an oil seal is a sort of generic term for a rubber seal that keeps a fluid, be it engine oil, gearbox oil, brake fluid, LHM or even coolant, from leaking.
Your leak is actually going to be easier to cure than my pump leak.

Thanks Stewart and Bernie. Im going to try and track down the kit tomorrow. By the way- What is an O ring? Im really not sure what to ask for- Obviously I dont want the Diesel specialist to have to do it as im sure ill manage once ive got the part, saving me a bit of money. Hopefully they will have the part in stock as I need the car fully legal by Thursday as I have to drive to the midlands. I called GSF in Portsmouth and they said they didnt do the throttle spindle repair kit. Thanks for letting me know the definition of an oil seal Bernie I didnt realise that term applied to things that dont contain oil as well. So tomorrow my job is to track down a diesel specialist in Portsmouth. Cheers, Adam

Take a photo of the pump top and have it with you when obtaining the parts, the kit I bought had a flat plate (you cant see that bit, its inside) with the spindle attached, a metal bush to drift into the top of the pump and an O ring which fits into a groove on the spindle, observe cleanliness and make sure you put things back where they were, have fun.

A O ring is a simple piece of solid rubber tube made into a circle.
I've found a link

Cheers Bernie. I called a specialist today and they said they dont do a kit as such they just sell all the individual parts. Dont know how much they would be but if the guy was to do it it would be £140 with labour so its deffinately a DIY job. Ive removed the 4 screws holding the lid on but cant work out what i need to remove now as there are some internal workings stopping me from rmoving the lid completely. I dont want to pull it in case it messes things up. There does seem to be a large and very strangely shaped bolt on the side of the unit on the bottom bit that if I were to remove would require a special tool.

Adam,
The last guy with this prob had the lucas pump - an easy fix with a cheap kit. UNfotunately, its not so easy on the Bosch pump.
You are doing it the right way, just tighten the 10mm lock nut down enough until it stops squirting out without altering idle speed. (read the last post).
I had the same prob and the specialist told me it was basically a write off pump.
Cheers
