CX 2400 Pallas

Post by Cooch Goodwin »

Hi
My name I Cooch and I live in Cootamundra in the South West Slopes of NSW Australia.
I have just bought my son a CX 2400 pallas and it has not been going for about 2 years I have no books on it except for owners manual.
I have got the thing going eventualy but have a few problems that I hope someone can help me with.
Problem one is the LHM fluid in the resevoir is down to about 1/4 of the resivoir and when the CX is lifted the reservoir all but empties.
When I first started it front and back both rose but now only the rear does. I did not want to go into to mutch expense early. I wanted to see if the donk and g-box etc were ok first. Now I need to move it over a pitt so I can get under it to see if any major components are stuffed. I have just bought some LHM Plus from Penrite and need to know if I have to bleed anything or do I just tip it in?
Problem two how do I time the engine easily? are there timing marks somewhere?
The LHM pump has an intermittent rattle in it. Is this due to the lack of oil? A releif valve or is the pump stuffed?
any help will be greatly appreciated

Hi there, As far as the lhm is concerned, it may be worth lowering the car and cleaning the reservoir and filters with petrol so you start with a clean system,(but you can indeed just pour the LHM into the reservoir) I'm sure some info on this will follow shortly from other CX owners. A periodic noise from the pump is normal on Hydraulic cits, its their way of maintaining a steady pressure in the system -so hopefully nothing is awry there.. wish I could be more help, but I'm sure there will be a flurry of info to take you through simple tests that you can do yourself. I've always dreamed of having a CX, so I hope you can keep this car going.. Best Wishes..

Cooch,
You've gone all the way to the UK to meet a few Aussies.
The CX is almost an extinct beast over in Europe and UK, in fact percentagewise I'd say you'll find more in Oz than in the UK.
There is plenty on LHM changes here but most will relate to later models and possibly more on a couple of sites closer to home.
Try these:

Incidentally, how much did you pay for your LHM? It can be bought ither from the NSW CCC for about $10 a litre or directly from a Total distributor for around $130 for a 20 litre container.
You didn't buy the car of a guy Laurie from Armidale by any chance? The deceased estate car?
All the best,

Gee's Alan,
you wanted me to do the typing did you ??
The reason the pump is rattling is you have exhausted the LHM in the resevoiur, ie: it's sucking air.
You need to check the LHM level with the CX on HIGH. You will most likely need to add a a couple of litres of LHM before the car will raise to high at which time you can check the level using the indicator float on the top of the reseviour. The reason the front of the CX isn't lifting is there isn't enough LHM in it (have you noticed the pump starts rattling as soon as the car stops lifting ?? no fluid == no lift & no pressure).
There will be a leak somewhere, most likely a very minor leak that has slowly drained the reseviour over time. Once you have the car running you will most likely notice a small puddle of LHM on the ground after you have parked it. The leak will be somewhere above that.
Anyway, this bulletin board is mostly later cars, all the CX's in the UK have rotted away long ago. I suggest you come over to the dark side and post a message here:

Shane! There are still survivors over here and a large number of those who have owned CXs. THat being said, Aussiefrogs is a very good site.

Cooch,
Strange that I have relations in W-W that I lost touch with years ago, Have no worries about the engine, providing that it has not been run without oil and has done less than say 1,000,000 Ks it should be fine.
I have the official W/S manual for the CX if there's any bits you need I can scan them and e-mail it to you
