CX value on the market

Post by Thunderbird »

Considering only the two best models:
- CX GTi Turbo 2
- CX Turbo Diesel 2
Consider leather seats, AC, etc. (typical on these models)
Are these prices (based on condition) correct for the GTi/TRD?:
Bad ________ 750€ :: 500€
Poor ______ 1.500€ :: 1.000€
Average ___ 3.000€ :: 2.000€
Good ______ 5.000€ :: 3.500€
Excellent ___ 7.500€ :: 5.000€
Show _____ 10.000€ :: 8.000€

Not in the UK. To achieve more than £1000 (€1600) a CX would have to be in fabulous condition. I am hoping to buy one in the next few days for not a lot more than a couple of tanks of fuel for it!

No way above 500 - 800 Euro for any CX here, no matter what engine/condition.

That's life in Portugal, fellas, believe it or not!
BTW, in a classic cars exhibition last weekend, there was a beautiful 11CV Familiale for sale at 30.000 euro. It was so gorgeous in bordeaux...

Yep the CX's will be cheap in the UK.... But have you seen the quality of older cars out of the UK .....uuuurrrrrgggghhhhh.....
They don't dissappear before your eyes in other countries, so hold there value. Another good reason is the price of fuel, the CX is simply a HUGE car in the UK, in Australia for example it's simply a 'car'/sedan, in the USA it a 'Compact' as it's small (and petrol is extremely cheap).

You must notice these prices are for the latest versions and the two most expensive CX models. For other models prices would be much lower.
I've checked that in France the prices are not distant from this table. The petrol version is well regarded.
Check this site (bottom of the page) - value in the US is within the same values:

UK prices may be an exception to the rule...

What you've missed though, is that the page is dated 1999, so these prices are 6 years out of date.
I don't think UK prices are an "exception" to any rule, they just reflect the horrendous corrosion problems we have to contend with, and the overall low value of just about any car over 10 years old. 95% of cars over 10-12 years old will never be worth more than £1000 (1600euro)
I have bought some cars, around 10 years old, in perfectly runnable condition for under £100 (160euro)

Not directly relevant, but I paid about Euro4,000 for a very good CX2400 Pallas in Australia a few months ago. No rust. Repeat, no rust. Aircon works well. Near immaculate but for door trims.....
Only thing not working is the clock.

What is worth more in your countries: A petrol or a diesel CX?
What would you prefer?

We only ever got Series I CX's in Australia. They never sold deisels are here.
We received a handful of the following:
--CX2200 pallas without power steering
--CX2200 pallas with daravi
--CX2400 C-matics pallas
--CX2400 GT 5spds (less than 50)
--CX2500 ie autos
--a handful of CX2500 GTi's.
John has what is without doubt one of the best early series I CX2400 C-matics in the world. I know of just one that may be better than it. It recently sold for $20,000aud (yes the number of zero's there is correct). That car I imagine belongs in a museum though.
We actually have some of the very few early CX's left in the world that are series I and RHD. The sad bit is they are near worthless so there numbers are rapidly declining. No doubt in the near future they'll suddenly become collectable, however there will be none of them left :(

Shane,
Nice of you to say so. I like the car enormously. Living up to its reputation and condition is the challenge.....
I think its price was very reasonable for the condition but it sure was way above normal (whatever that means for something so uncommon).
Cheers

SShhhhhhhh! Don't tell everyone! I want to buy that one and restore it. I've wanted a CX Diesel Estate for about 12 years (as long as I've been able to drive) and it's bloody typical that one comes up on ebay just when I haven't really got the spare cash to be buying stuff.
Any advice on just what may be needed to restore it will be gratefully received. I am considering stripping it back to a bare shell and having it hot-dip-galvanised to make it last forever! Has anyone seperated the bodyshell from the subframe on one of these before?

Winning bid £343.33-did you get it?-at that price for a runner it was certainly a bargain for someone!!
For you Aussies, who are no doubt going to be weeping and gnashing your teeth, thats about the same as what we would pay for an old Escort, Astra, or Xantia near the end of its useful life, and there's millions of them to choose from.......

David
Philippe at Medway Citroen has just shown me the CX he restored - it is beautiful and would make you weep. So if you want to talk to someone, he is definitely the person. However bear in mind that he is a garage owner as well as an enthusiast so is not always able to spend hours on the phone. He is on this forum but I think it is his son Remy who spends more time reading and responding.
