A colleague at work has a 1.8 petrol Xantia, 1997 or so vintage that just cuts out with a mind of its own. No particular circumstances, it can do it driving at any speed and will even do it sat idling at the lights.
Somewhat annoying and dangerous, but all he has to do is to flick the ignition off and then on again to fire it up again.
Anyone with similar experiences or know of a possible reason?

Water in the fuel can do this.
Water comes from condensation both inside car's tank - and at the stations tanks. Sometimes you get a splash of water not even knowing it from the filler. Especially on rainy days of course.
Remove rear squab, lift up tank sender, Syphon up some fuel from the well here. Water in petrol looks like jelly lumps swimming around on the bottom of the fuel.
