XU10 petrol engine - oil temp reading

Post by WallaceLee »

I fitted a meter cluster from the VSX model. It has the oil temp gauge. My oil temp goes to max of 70 degree C only. even on a hot day about 36 degree C, it never touches 80 degree C.
Any idea what is the normal reading for oil temp? Currently sensor is at the front , facing the radiator.
Thanx!!

I agree with Andy for petrol ones, but diesels do get higher particularly when on motorways where 90 degrees is the norm. If making long uphill climbs or as speed increases beyond 70ish then it increases further.

Richard, My VSX diesel turbo temperature sits at 120 degrees which must be to high, although at idle it will drop to 90. Why does my oil get so hot?

Your oil gets hot because its used to cool and lubricate the engine, in particular the turbo. The oil cooler is on the filter housing so the oil is returned to the sump hot (where the sensor is) and gets cooled by the oil cooler on its way to do some cooling / lubricating.
120 degrees does sound excesively hot when compared to Richard's 90 degrees. Neither of my Xantias have oil temperature gauges so I couldn't say how hot my two run.

I think I'd be alittle worried about that, atleast it drops when its at rest i guess.
the sensor for the oil temp, what colour is it by the way ((its the connector color on the sensor, i have to retro fit one to mine and i think that i gave my original one away!)

My TD oil temp sits about 90-100 on the motorway, doing 80-90 mph.Normal driving is 90.With the caravan on at the w/end,on the motorway it sits about 100-130,depending if i`m going uphill or on the flat.My Dad`s 53/2003 406 HDI 110 sits at 130-150 with the caravan on the back.Although if you dod`nt have a gauge on the car,you wouldn`t know the temp,& then you wouldn`t worry about it!
Richard,i think it was you a few months ago that posted about the oil temp, before & after fitting the lower engine cover?I replied at the time that since refitting mine, the temp hasn`t risen.Well,it has.About 10 oC overall on the motorway.

In my ZX, the oil temp stays around 80, rising to 90-95 in heavy traffic. Only once while going fast on a unphill twisty zone I have seen it rise to 100-105.

Interesting about the engine cover, I'd thought that with the lower lip on it and the vent just behind it would cause a vacumn when at speed, thereby sucking out hot air from the radiator etc, especially at speed.
That shows how much I know!!
According to the handbook, "Under no circumstances should the engine oil temperature be allowed to exceed 150 degrees."

Yes Richard, read that as well. The highest mine ever went was about 140.But that was towing our fully laden 3 week honeymoon loaded caravan up Mont Blanc in France to the tunnel.Foot to the floor all the way 2nd & 3rd gear, with an out side temp of 35 degrees in august![:p]
With all the windows open & the heater on flat out on max hot air to cool engine!Sounded like a hovercraft with the cooling fans on max[:I][:D][8D][:)]
