the tell tale light should work whether the system is functional or not, check the fuses first,it might be the bulb in the switch thats blown.

When my a/c dosen`t work on cold days(i.e you switch it on but the temp is to low for it to work, meaning the compresser dosen`t work)the switch still lights up.What car is it?

If its a mk 1,upto `98,the only a/c fuse is F12,10 amp,in the facia fuse box.But this also covers heating,a/c,cruise control,hydractive suspension,alarm system,alarm siren & instruments.
So if any of them work, its not the fuse.
If you have the 98 on mk2,facia fuse box F14 5 amp. This covers the a/con & fuel injection ecu.
