Xantia Glow Plugs

Post by RichG »

It looks like I may need to change the glow plugs on my Xantia. I will check them for resistance at the weekend however it is lumpy on start-up for about 5 seconds then runs perfectly. Even using the glow plugs twice makes no difference. I have read all the post regarding the job but can somebody tell me whether it is easier to remove them whilst the engine is hot or cold?
Thanks
Richard

I would choose cold. By the time you get the ones behind the inj pump out the engine will prob be cold anyway.

In order to get the plug out from behind the pump you will require an 'offset' ring spanner, very difficult to do without it.

i changed mine in my lunch break ended up taking me one and a half hours and had to bend a cheap spanner to get to plugs behind pump , i changed mine when engine was hot, it was a cold day so it kept my hands warm.

Thanks for the replies. I have numerous spanners so hopefully the job will not take too long.

I found one of those telescopic magnetic gizmos wonderful for:-
a) recovering the glowplug that got away and dissappeared somewhere behind the alternator bracket.
and
b) acting as a safety measure to stop a re-occurrence of 'a'
Job took about 45 minutes - finding the lost glowplug took 2-3 hours !!!
Watch out also for those little nuts which hold the electric connection - its surprising how far the connecting cable can flick them if its been fitted with some tension.

If Jack can replace all 4 glow plugs in 45 mins then he has either done it many times before or deserves a medal!
10:15 Start Job. Start with the difficult one (No.1 cambelt end),
10:30 Inlet pipes off.
11:15 No.1 8mm nut still in place. Dropped Spanner!
12:00 Found Spanner. Tied string to all tools. Job 0% complete.[:(]
12:15 Break for lunch
12:45 Start again
15:15 No 1 plug completed (should be downhill now[:)]
17:00 All Finished (breathes a sigh of relief). Back and legs ache.
17:145 Cleaned up. Time for Tea.
I had to cut down my 12/13 offset ring to get at No. 1 None of my other 12mm spanners, sockets would fit. I checked the old plugs and No 3 was open circuit, all the rest were below 1 ohm.
I wonder how much a garage would charge for the same job?
