Xantia - Alternator Light Flicker...

Post by MikeO »

Driving my 94 Xantia TD from Scotland to East Anglia on Sunday and noticed that I was getting an infrequent, intermittent flicker from the alternator warning light (Battery symbol).
It was so brief that I couldn't work out what the symbol on the light was, until I stopped and checked. It stopped flickering , for a few hours, then started again.
I tried loading the electrics up (fan & HRW on etc), to see if it made any difference, but it didn't.
This is probably not relevant, but the times when the light was flickering were the times I was at relatively high altitude (Pennines) and the temperature was at its lowest (probably just above freezing).
Has anyone else had this happen? Any ideas what might be causing it?

Usually it suggests the alternator brushes are worn and as a result the charging current varies. Could be a bad earth tho...
