Can anyone recommend a citroen garage in hampshire

Post by Garysz »

It would appear that my old Xantia may be leaking on its cylinder head gaskett. The car is worth <£500 and have just been quoted £600-£800 by a citroen dealer in mid-hampshire to fit a new one! I can see that the past on GSF are about £30 so thats alot of hours an/or profit!
Can anyone recommend a reasonable mechanic who will do it for reasonable money (portsmouth / southampton/ winchester area)? And does it have to be a citroen specialist?

Dory's Garage in Sway may be a little out of your area but he is very reasnoable and certainly worth a go; Used to take my xantia there when I lived in Bournenouth.

It takes a lot of hours. The gasket is £30, the Bolts have to be changed as well, so the parts count usually racks up to £60ish. Main dealer adds 50% to parts prices at least, so the bits cost £100 and they charge £50-£60 per hour. The price you have been quoted is about right. I'd expect a competent independent to have the head checked and skimmed 'cos it matters to him if the job is done twice so I'd expect the job to come to around £400. www.bxclub.co.uk will have a good list of specialists. You can use a non specialist. THey'll just charge you double because it is a Citroen, that's all.

I can highly recommend someone in the centre of Southampton - did my BX TD about 4 years ago and its still going! If you're interested leave your e-mail address and I'll send you details.
Head gasket is purely an engine job and then its just a PSA diesel. - so no need for a Citroen specialist.

Have used a fella in Soton for years, not a Cit specialist as such but has sorted all sorts of nasties on my Xantia without fuss and for good money.
Agree with Jeremy, head gasket not a job for a specialist - basic engine work. This fella did the head gasket on my wifes Rover K series engine (nuch more of a specialist job) a couple of years ago. Done in day, price about £250 and no probs since.
If details needed let me know.
