Hello i have a Peugeot 405 td 95. i have done lots of work to the car including new engine/ cylinder head/ clutch and the list goes on.
i put a second hand diesel pump on it and it runs ok but just want to check the diesel timing to the combuston to make sure its at its peak. Just wondering what kit i need and any ideas of where to get one. CAN ANYONE HELP

Hi Joe,
the kit you need usually costs around £120, but there is a guy on ebay (makita something I think) that does them for about £50. Yoyu might get it cheaper than that though. The make is FACOM p/n: 952.
Also lucas or a diesel specialist will do it for $60-£100, but if you do it yourself then you get to keep the timing kit!

I bought a pair of dial guages to time mine - they were GBP30 each. You will need to bodge up some brackets to hold them in place too. It's a bit fiddly getting the right spot in the side of the injection pump - depending which flavour you have, but apart from that it's not difficult. Allow an afternoon.
Hello me again will this kit do i found on ebay...???

The access point is in the centre of the distributor head at the end of the pump, look where injector pipes come out at the end and you will see a bolt head in the centre, that is where you screw the mounting for the dial test indicator, older pumps have 8mm threads, later ones are 12mm.
Depending on the amount of wear on the pump the stated timing value (0.66mm IIRC) probably wont be the pumps sweet spot, because as the pump wears it develops the critical (injector opening pressure) pressure slightly later in its stroke, so some trial and error is the norm but that figure gives you a starting point.
Unless the kit is very compact with a tiny DTI, it will be necessary to remove the oil filler tube to get the DTI in place, that makes trial and error testing a long laborious task.
Its not like timing a petrol engine where a spark can be generated instantly at a precise crankshaft angle.

That SP one looks ok joe, but you dont need the lucas top access stuff. Its probably better quality than the FACOM one. As DB says, you might have to remove the oil filler tube to get the timing spot on by trial and error, but then again if you get someone else to do it they are only going to set it beck to the recommended settings[;)] I wouldnt pay more than£50 for it though.
