im not the only one that get duplicated post then,i thought i was special ha ha ha,usualy when the clutch is not disengaged completly you will have probs getting into 1st and revers,in your case it sounds like the therd gear sincro,also there is no need to hack cut and bash when doing this job,it seems some people give in to easy

Ive been getting worried past few weeks as the clutch was a bit heavy and their seemed to be a sticking point near the bottom which i would have to loosen up by pressing up and down a few times, well went to do the fuel filter saturday and a bit of diesel spilt down (oops) and its seemed to have loosened up the cable, its a much softer and no sticking bit :D

Lubing the clutch cable end and linkages is an important part of the service schedule - looks like yours hadn't been done for a while. I suggest that you grease it properly to ensure long-term smoothness.
