Be a man just do it. Forget the gloves they're for wimps. Try smoking whilst your doing it even if you dont smoke. Maybe think about taking the wheels off and climbing under it whilst only supported by a jack.

I'm sure I'd feel safer going to sleep under a car just supported by a jack than getting a car with some of you guys. Lets face it how often have you jacked a car up and its suddenly fallen to the floor. How many people have you heard dying from having diesel injected into them. And last of all how many people end up in hospital after smashing their car to bits because they like to tinker and then drive it fast?

Back to the subject- how many miles has it done?
Injectors are really just service items like filters, etc, albeit with longer intervals, and cannot be expected to go on for ever, especially if fuel filter changes have been neglected by a previous owner.
Squirting them into a jam jar won't tell you much unless you know what to look for.

I've mentioned it before on here, but I have the engine service manual for a Toro Groundsmaster, its a ride on grass cutter. The engine is an XUD, and the manual has a section on servicing injectors.
When you're testing injectors you are looking for an uninterupted conical spray pattern with good atomisation i.e very uniform fine spray. Also, the injector should not weep or leak below its opening pressure and should open at the correct pressure. As you slowly pump the injector tester you should hear a squeaking / chattering noise as the injector opens and closes.

Thank you all for your time. This job seems well beyond me. An interesting point that even if the spray pattern is consistent, I will not know about the opening pressure. I will probably have to take the chance and get some recon injectors. Just seemed a change to bung £120 at the car on the off chance, particularly as the car has a star in the screen and will probably fail the test on this. (Any ideas on the cost of a screen? Could I fit a second hand one or is it specialist stuff again?) Combined these two will probably exceed the value of the car. For info, the car has done 116k. There is something wrong because the car is also flat compared to my old zx non turbo. It will do 100mph comfortably as done in France, probably a bit more, but it’s a slug pulling through third, fourth and fifth. I don’t think the pump has been mucked about with as yellow paint still in order. curious that my old car lasted 214k without injector change? Thanks once again.
