Welcome to this very helpful, informative and sometimes humerous forum for Citroën owners (please observe the correct spelling of Citroën )
Sideswipe out of the way..........
I reckon it's a problem with the immobiliser. Try disconnecting the battery, leaving for 30 mins then reconnecting. Does the Xsara have a flashing key icon on the dashboard? this would indicate a problem with the transponder key (if it indeed has one)
All the best
Dan

Thanks Dan, apologies for the spelling, tried disconnecting the battery still did not work ( I took it off this morning for a couple of hours), I know the "key" sign on the dashboard you mean but it's not flashing or staying on.
The hazard warning light switch however is flashing very quickly (unlike when the car is locked and it flashes very slowly)I don't know if that's connected to the fault.
The car was left for a few days prior to the fault so I'm assuming that has something to do with it..........before that no problems whatsoever mate

No offence at the spelling, just one of my personal pet hates!!
If when you turn on the ignition the key lights up then goes out I would take it as read that the transponder is ok.
I take it the fob is locking/unlocking the car ok?
Because your indicators are flashing I would hazard(!) a guess that it is alarm/immob circuit related and would start to think about going to a specialist.

Sounds like you may need to re-programme the key to the car. Not to sure how to do this but search this site under any thing like immobiliser, alarm or central locking, and you'll get the answer.
Did you change the key fob battery before or after the problem started? I knoe you only get 10 seconds on the Xsara to change the battery befor you need to re-set.

Bit of a long shot but you never know, worth trying where transponder keys are concerned.

Should do as you'll be coding the key to the car not the other way around. It's one of these open the car with the plip, get in and close with the plip then stick the key in the ignition and turn on but do not start up and then open the car with the plip still in the ignition and in start mode (but not started). Or something. Have a search on the site.
if the imobiliser is not picking up the signal from the key then the key icon light on the dash should flash rapidly (you can try it by sheilding the back of the key with tinfoil) so to me that rules out an imobliser problem plus i dont see where the hazzard lights would come into an imobiliser problem.
not starting & hazzard lights coming on ? id check out the inertia switch.

The inertia switch should be located under the bonnet. Left hand side looking from front to back, bright red top. I know there was alot of problems with the early ones and dealers re-called them for a repair, namely a cable tie to hold them in place. To re set just push down the red top and make sure it returns to it's original position.
