Diesel Power !!!!!

Post by Twiss »

Hello everybody
Iam planning to upgrrade my Zx TD Aura by doing the following:-
Piper cams (one that fits a pug 306 TD)
Garrett T2 turbo that I will have hybrided
Engine tune
Spax VSX suspension kit lower it 35mm
Set of 15" alloys (seen a set of panthers in halfords for £280)
set of side skirts (from cituning)
volcane bumpers ( got the back one just got to get the front now)
I think thats it but I posted this because I thought I would ask u lot if I have missed any thing out that i should do to the car?
opinions would be great, pics and advise of other projects could help?

sort the air intake! Standard air filters are pretty much useless. Either a straight swap for a K&N panel would be good, or an induction kit.
If you start getting decent power out of the lump you'll find you kill engine mount rubbers pretty quick so well worth going for a polly bush (£40 ish but then your not having to change every 10,000 miles!
Make sure the cooling system is spot on, fully flushed, new thermo and fans checked!
then get rid of the rubbish intercooler that the engine comes with and get a full Alu sports one from either Allisport or Allard's. The intercooler alone will probably make more difference to power than turbo and cam upgrades combined!
After that, water intercooler spray, charge cooler and direct water/lpg injection is the way to go!

Plus changing /moving the intercooler, to do that i need a manifold from a xantia right? would that fit my Zx TD engine ?

if your getting the front mount intercooler then you need the inlet manifold from the xantia, you also need a load of different pipes. from what ive seen today i'd suggest you can use a standard Xantia intercooler between a standard ZX radiator and fans, certainly looked promising to me, i have a few new ideas after a day in the scrap yard!
found the poly details;
<i>hi vanny, we do still have the group A mounts in stock and i can do you one for £40 including postage. I can press it into the mount for you, but if you have access to a press then you are better off doing it yourself.

You will notice a considerable reduction in the amount of engine movement, they are very stiff indeed.

I got a K&N panel element for £10.50 on Ebay, its one of those things to keep looking out for!

Induction kits make em sound like an old commer breadvan! go for the filter element, what about a boost gauge? and an O ring block/metal Head gasket.

Made by curty payen I think, they are a bit dearer,(£25-30) made up of thin metal pressings with the usual rubber bits, they are said to be tougher than the usual composite ones, I use them for turbo and non turbo too.

How easy is it to remove the engine ?
Would it be better to take it out of the top or drop it out the bottom ?

Top, and easy :D
well relatively! take both drive shafts off, take the rad and air box off, take all the pieps off (water, heater matrix, air intake, fuel) take the exhaust off, take the bottom mount AND THE BRACKET off, stick on chain hoist or engine crane (i prefer a decent chain hoist!) and remove the gearbox mount and upper engine mount. The tricky bit is getting the gearbox past everything. The resolution is to get the car body up as high as you can, send the gear box down and the block up then once there at a 45 degree (ish) angle, hoist away. You could go down, but its a lot of hassle, and easier to go up!

hey,
looks like we have a few tuners of the old xud here! how about some figures for waht you have done and what difference it has made?
By the way, I think ti motorsport (no link) are cheaper for the engine mount from the same place. He is also threatening to do the gearbox mount in poly soon.
Cheers

Now thats a useful one!
The gearbox mount isnt exactly wonderful. Its DEFFINATLEY advisable to put twin Nylocs onto the stud, i've seen a racer that shreded the nut and the gear box dropped onto the drive shaft and wedged (fortunatley in the workshop). Had to cut out the driveshaft in the en, took ages and we couldnt do anything until it was sorted as the car was blocking the shop door :(
I've not really got round to tuning the car, dont have the money! Though i do have a 1.9TD in the BX 16v, with front mount intercooler. I have lots of things to do to it, but its gonna take a while yet, mostly money related!
Im considering an engine rebuild at the end of the summer dependant on if i have any money then :D My solution is less holidays, they cost a fortune!

i take it then the the pug engine mounts ( poly bush ones ) will fit the Citroen zx engine mounts as i take they are mount the same way/
so if i phoned up and asked fork the ploy bushs for the pug 306 td they should fit my citroen zx TD.

tada! most things are the same between the zx and 306 engine from intercooler down to the sump plug. The difference is in the bit that comes from the subframe to the mount, though i think for the ZX and the 306 its interchangable, the 306 one looks a little different.

The metal head gasket was mentioned; this is recommended by Citroen now as it will help avoid the head gasket going as often. if your tuning the engine i would recommend that you upgrade this first and have the head checked at the same time (GSF do sell multilayer metal head gaskets). If you want a cheep cam fit one from a standard diesel XUD as this has a slight overlap (which is what the piper will have too), if you do this remember that you will lost some boost down the exhaust so you will need to up the boost on the turbo to compensate. Doing this also means that when cold and on ideling the engine will become very lumpy and may have little power for the first 400rpm. Adding a bigger intercooler or a charge cooler and second radiator is the way to go by doing this you will get more power and not much hastel.
Wooky has my test engine for this setup so when he has finished installing it into his van he should find he has a very responsive engine.
