Modi - at least you will have a car where you know that all the important services have been done. It might not be worth a lot but you won't find a better car for that money anywhere.

Does anyone on here know when the belt should be changed on the C3?

I'll second what Neil has said, Jason. I've replaced the radiator and other 'service' type items. Check that the rear brake callipers aren't mis-aligned (the disk should run in centrally through them) as I have had trouble with both - and it's easier to repair before things break. Also boosted mine (it's easy) and it's running fine. Depending upon the condition, I'd say £800 is a pretty good price.

Depends on the engine for the C3 but the Hdi is 150,000 miles and TU5 is 80,000 miles according to Citroen. You can halve these if you want to be ultra safe.

My 96 2.0 16 valve is overdue for a belt change ( 141,000 mls , last changed at 72,000).
Now here's the problem... do I entrust my pride and joy to a Citroen Dealer and pay through the nose ?, or, Do it myself, though looking at the genuine Citroen worksheet for this you need a special tool to measure the tension.
Anyone out there actually done a 2 litre twin cam belt change? any tips would be appreciated as I am loath to fork out £200-£300 when the belt costs around £20 and a few hours of a weekend.
any advice gratefully accepted.

I haven't done one on a Xantia 16V but have done them on BX16Vs which seem to be the one everybody has sleepless nights about.
They are done by locking the cam sprockets using stepped pins and the crank with a 7mm pin, loosening tensioners, removing the belt, checking the water pump and replacing if in doubt, be sure to turn the tensioners anti-clockwise so as to not totally screw up the adjustments and tensioning the belt so as it is set to turn around 45degrees at the longest run.
Precaustions are to take the plugs out before you start and the locking pins immediately you've finished, and preferrably to support the engine of a sling/engine crane as opposed to on a jack with a hunk of timber under it to make it easier to manouvre and eliminate the risk of dropping it through the radiator.
On a BX it's about 2 1/2 - 3 hours for the first one and about 1 1/2 hours thereafter. On them we usually slacken the bottom mount and remove the bolts on the top one. If there's any major differences between the BX and Xantia, I've no doubt someone here will give you the rundown.

just to give you a clue, I changed the accelerator cable at a citroen specialist and paid £70, which i think it was a kind of rob.
