i've tested the sensors on my xantia and one of them is giving no reading at all, does this indicate a failed sensor or a break in the circuit somewhere.

Yes - it indicates a break in the circuit or a failed sensor. Usually it's a brake in one of the cables - often the exposed ones that get a lot of twisting, or a grotty connector. Start by identifying which sensor is o/c and then trace the cable from the sensor back to the first cable joint. Pull it apart and check for a resistance across the sensor. If there's still no resistance, cut the cable off about 4" from the sensor and try again - still no resistance, sorry, new sensor required!
