Why different car tax rate for Saxo's and AX?

Post by leonard1 »

I'm amused (and empty in the pocket now!) as my 1996 1l AX car tax last month was £62 and my 2001 1.1 Saxo this month is £57. I know its only a fiver difference for 6 months but thought they would be the same ...

Isn't it something to do with vehicles with a lower CO2 output being placed in lower tax groups - but only after a certain date.

Don't start me about Vehicle Excise Licence. Something like £28 billion is collected from the various road fund licence evey year with the "sole" purpose of being put back in to the roads and transport network of the country. So why is it then that the goverment only spent £6 billion last year in total on the roads ?

Stuart
I think it was Winston Churchill no less as Chancellor of the Exchequer who raided the Road Fund for the first time in the 1920's. This practice has of course carried on uninterrupted ever since. Doesn't seem to have put us off driving does it!
