Trailing arm bearings on the ZX are goosed, forget about that axle/subframe and source a good used one because that one is now scrap.
Yes I'd be a bit worried about the fuel consumption of a petrol auto Xant, thats why I would never consider one[:0]

After a diesel ZX, the fuel consumption around town will be "Damn, I must have a leak in the tank".
Probably around 22 MPG, up to about 32 on a gentle run.
i.e. It'll be a lot cheaper to fix the ZX subframe.

I just had a knackered torsion arm bar bearing ....big messy sod of a job which only citroen would undertake!! So I got advice from here and picked up a second hand rear subframe (complete with shocks, arms , hubs etc...) for £50.00 , cost £100 to get fitted, car now feels much better than before ....well it doesnt float/roll around corners anyway!!!
Only snag was brakes were slightly diff size so had to strip off old ones and replace in new hubs etc...
got it from cit-ren salvagte in Norwich .See parts gateway on web
good luck
