Hydraulic pump

Post by espzetec »

OK some of you may have read that my pump needs replacing.
How can i remove the pump one a scrap car, and fit it to my car? what should i look out for? LHM will leak everywhere i pressume. will i need to bleed the system for my car to work again. any specialist tools required? how long will it take me? what other parts will i need?
I think i will just cut through any lines on the scrap car to save time and i pressume i just unbolt the pump from the scrap car?

I wouldn't worry about this. If you cut the pipes off the scrap it will be ok but try and unscrew them as you will then have a practice at dismantling and know if the union threads are ok. I am going blindly into this as I do not have a Xantia ( I am assuming that is what you have got) but you could get a couple of brake hose clamps for clamping up the hoses on your own car and - if you can stretch to it - a pipe spanner (has a gap in it to go over pipe) of the right size. These things aren't vital but will make life easier.

There is only one host that you really will have to worry about LHM gushing out of and that is the large bore host which supplies the pump with LHM from the reservoir. It will syphon the contents of your reservoir onto your boots if you let it. You won't need to clamp the hose, as long as you can get the end of it up higher than the oil level in the reservoir.
The most difficult bit will be getting the belt and tensioner set up properly.
Make sure you get a pump with the right sized pully for your car, they aren't all the same pully diameter.

I ASSUME THAT FOR THE 1.9TD XANTIA ARE THE SAME PULLEYS ACROSS THE RANGE? THE CAR I AM GETTING IT OFF IS AN SIMILAR AGE TO MINE (1993) AND IS DIESEL TOO?
SO ITS JUST A CASE OF UNDOING THE HOSES AND THEN UNBOLTING THE PUMP FROM THE ENGINE?
I THINK I WILL CLAMP THE HOSE TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE. I WILL JUST USE A G-CLAMP OR SOMETHING?
WHEN YOU SAY THE MOST DIFFICULT BIT IS SETTING UP THE BELT AND TENSIONER CORRECTLY, WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
