Cit ZX 1.9TD

Post by gwoolie »

Have a ZX1.9TD 1997 Est
Recently the engine seems to "knock" more than usual. It has regular services, no power loss, but the wife has commented on more fuel being used.
My first guesses are the injectors? What thought have the rest of you Citroen Guru's?

If its making unhealthy knocking, and smokes heavilly when its doing it, it could be suffering from a stuck injector.
If its just intermittent stick some injector cleaner through it and see if it changes, otherwise its time for the diesel specialist to remove the injectors clean them and check their spray patterns.

I posted here a few weeks ago about a similar phenomenon on my BX TZD Turbo. Someone suggested that the timing may be out after I had the cam belt changed. I got my Cit mechanic to check the timing and it was fine. He did adjust the tensioner a bit although he said it was nearly perfect.
I had been running an injector cleaner in the car prior to the noise appearing. I have now stopped this to see if the knocking reduces. It seemed to come on gradually and is louder when cold. You could check that the cold start device is working correctly. This advances the pump timing when cold and it will knock more with the timing advanced. Mine checked out O.K.
In New Zealand they have recently changed the diesel formulation and it has a lower sulphur level now. I wonder if this has changed the burning characteristics of our fuel. Have you started filling up anywhere different lately since the knocking increased?
