C4 gremins

Post by Ceenine »

I have finally solved the EGS repair on the C4 caused by sloppy reinstallation of positive lead from battery to the BSM fusebox touching the casing of the main ECU. Sorted after short period (48 months) culminating today in exploratory drag down the local country road outside the front of the property, flipping through the 6 speeds of the EGS gearbox. All fine , fabulous in fact (the emotion was extraordinary) except that I continue to have the following faults, and they are:-

Remote will only lock car but will not unlock it (requires key on passenger side door to achieve unlock), and
Direction indicators flash in the pod just beyond ,in relation to the driver, the steering wheel,in half second repetitions and left/right flashing simultaneously, and
Front indicator lights flash together in half second repetitions upon opening drivers side door, and
Rear lights flah in same timing sequence to front indicator light but stay on longer than from indicator lights (one minute 45 seconds from commencement), and
...well that's enough isn't it?

All lighting functions otherwise operate properly.

The first respondent to provide a solution to this "security" problem will be sent 2 bottles of superior Tasmania cool climate (naturally) of Pinot Gris, freight free of course.

I had forgotten what a fun car it is to drive.

PS
Key fob battery measured voltage is 2.9
Security locking activates after about 5 seconds after moving off from rest , which it didn't before I fried the ECU.

I have been over all my fuses, cleaned the electric part of my key fob and still no fix.

After frying my electrics I have replaced the essentials including my gearbox ECU. After much Lexia -ing I have initialised the EGS within an inch(25.4mm) of its life, and after finding that a maxifuse which was critical to the actuator fluid pumping was in the wrong slot, I can now drive the car.

Apart from the door locking problem, the following faults have been logged by my Lexia:-

P0238 Turbo presure signal short circuit to positive or open circuit or value too high,
PO2670 Engine speed, air-conditioning pressure signal short circuit earth or value too low
PO 532 Air-conditioning pressur signal short circuit to earth or value too low.

I note on the first one that the turbo pressure value is 4980 mv if that helps,

I have checked out the air-conditioning wiring diagram and note that its power goes through the fuse box but there is no fuse for it.

All together it appears that another BSM may be the answer to all the gremlins. It is the only significant electrical component that I haven't replaced after the mishap.

Apart from all that the rest of the car performs well. Any ideas from Blighty?

As far as the locking goes - you may have a dodgy microswitch in the fob under the unlock button. These can become de-soldered. Do you have a spare fob to try?

No I don't have a spare fob. The electronics in it look 100%. The central locking problem occurred when I fried the electrics so I believe that anothe BSM should do the trick. What do you think?

Well it’s also possible the control module under the steering wheel could be an issue, as that controls the indicators and also the locking request from the key fob to the transponder coil before it goes to the BSI.

If you pop your VIN up for me I’ll have a look at the diagrams for the systems.

Don, I've checked that VIN and the VIS and it is not returning any data at all. Can you double check, as without it I cannot get the full specs needed for the correct wiring diagram.

I've no doubt the VIN is correct, so it's more likely to be that you are in Australia and therefore outside of the European coverage for the models. So what I can try to do is a best guess approach to getting the correct diagram - can you confirm the RPO (build number) please - it should be on the tyre pressure label on the A Pillar and it's the one in this example "11665FV"
RPO.PNG
From that I should be able to work out what I need, also assume it's RHD and EGS and that you have ESP and it's 2009.

And just to confirm, that VIN is not recognised by Citroen Australia either and the VIN checksum is reported as wrong, so only the basics are known like the Manufacturer and the Year and engine code 9HZ which we can work out anyway, so the plot thickens.

I have given you the VIN from the donor BSI and ECU when I replaced my fried components.
The nos. on the inside pillar are:-

1130288
312
KCW

The car has 16" mag wheels, EGS with paddles , glass roof, ESP and of course in 1.6HDI DVTED6. Colour is Lagrune Sand.

It does not have heated seats, after market Hifi or other bits that are fused by MF6. I think the build date was late 2007. It was delivered 14.03.08

The original VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Right, now that makes more sense. It is the VIN from the original vehicle I needed, so that explains it. That works and matches the RPO too so I know what you have now.

C4 5 DOOR SALOON 1.6 HDi 110 particle emission filter (DV6TED4) piloted manual gearbox 6

I've got all I need from the VIN, so will get to work on it tomorrow as it's midnight over here :-D

So did you replace all three components when you changed these over?

The matched set of Fob Transponder chip, BSI and Engine ECU?

Also, was the BSI a compatible module?

The BSI was PSA part 6580QL or 6580QK for your Picasso. The Manufacturer's part would be 9663819980

I purchased a matched set from a Citroen-only wrecker in SA (not South Africa) and the BSI is 6580QK. The ECU no. is 1942H9
I believe that the main ECU was identical to the fried ECU (in its unfried state) as my interrogation of it with Lexia did not require any changes.

Sorry about the delay - something cropped up and I forgot until today: Here is the Central Locking Diagram for your C4, with specific Deadlocking & Child Lock Options specified as per your vehicle.

However, I just realised something which I forgot to ask. When you replaced the BSI, did you actually check the parameters for the locking were set correctly for your vehicle? If the donor vehicle has different deadlocking options, then these will be maintained on transfer to your vehicle. So I would double check the parameters. You are looking for the following options that should be set for your vehicle:
  • Electric Rear Child Lock
  • Deadlocking & Automatic Locking

If these 2 options are not set correctly it may have a direct bearing on how the locking functions of the Fob / Vehicle are implemented
The usual disclaimers apply - extreme caution advised when changing ECU parameters (please refer to Diagnostic Info here: Diagnostic Cautionary Advice)
When using Lexia, you will need to:
Select DIAGNOSIS
Select Vehicle
Select GLOBAL TEST
Choose the BSI / ECU
Select PROGRAMMING
Choose MANUAL CONFIGURATION

From the Sub Menus, choose:
CONFIGURATION
From the following 5 Menus, choose
LOCKING - DOORS & TAILGATE - IMMOBILISER - ALARM

Then check options are set as I have mentioned previously.

Most of the component abd ECU codes are on the wiki:

Big thanks for the very detailed and relevant respnse. The problem of the flashing lights in "warning" mode" when either the doors are opened or closed or when ignition is turned on may be related.

The cautionary guide is also extremely helpful for the enthusiastic amateur.

By the way, I did check the programming after installation of the donor bsi, however I seem to recall concentrating on the gearbox config.. I can't imagine 2 same config. cars delivered to Oz being programmed differently wrt locking but stranger things have happened in the state of Denmark.

Just to confirm Don, that different trim / models do have different Central locking for example - some have simple central locking and others have Deadlocking - some have manual child locking others have electronic buttons to do this - there are so many configuration parameters that have to be set to make things work - so thought it was worth a mention. Anyway, you have the correct place to check now. I would also check the lighting functions in relation to auto lights rain sensor options are also set correctly. I say this as the BSI may have been from another model that although may be the same part number, the vehicle may have completely different options and equipment fitted, so worth a check....
