Hi all,
Recently bought a 2001 C5 Exclusive. It has a couple of issues (nothing major, I hope), so I'm going through the forums at the moment.
Previously owned a s2 CX GTi. That was a cool car.
Cheers,
Sam

Hi Sam, Welcome to the FCF :)

What engine is in your C5? And what are the problems your having with it?

Hi Sam, and welcome!

It has V6 3 litre petrol motor with auto box.
The problems that need addressing are:
- FR hydraulic supply line leak
- FR lower arm bushing perished
- ESP may not be working (Well, the warning light doesn't come on with ignition on, however, multi-function screen doesn't seem to draw attention to any ESP related alert message so it might be a blown bulb on the instrument panel. I should give it a cane to see if it works, I guess).
- Cruise-control in-operative.
- Auto windscreen wiper is a bit spastic - it seems to have a mind of its own, as in, wiping speed doesn't necessarily reflect the amount of rain.
- One of the multi-function screen function, "Check Control" might not be working. (This might be on me, not knowing what to do with it, though). Long press on the button is supposed to something, but nothing seems to happen.
- Shifting down some times seems a bit rough and abrupt, especially 2nd -> 1st.
Well, I think that's about it.

Also, driver side door mirror glass seems wrong, possibly replaced with non-OE glass. it's flat, as opposed to the passenger side mirror which has gentle convex for the most of part with hard convex at the mirror extremity.
I presume the previous owner took the cheap way out, not sure how much the OE item costs.

The wipers going mad is either the sensor, which can be positioned incorrectly onto the screen or the screen has grease on it. Give the windscreen a good clean with some de-greasing product. I use hobrite!

When you press the button on the end of the wiper stalk does the display change to MPG, Average speed etc? If not then it is the button which is at fault.

Do you know when the auto box last had an oil change? Might be a useful thing to carry out if not.

i'll give that a go.

Yep, the button works fine - that's why I'm confused a bit. According to the owners manual, it's "Check Warning" rather than "Check Control", and with a long press on the button, it's meant to display all warning messages, if I read it correctly. I think it sort of works, because I had "Tyre(s) Punctured" warning message up on the screen and I could recall the message with a push of the button once it disappeared.

Don't know but I assume it's never been done. I think it's "sealed for life" job, which I am highly skeptical about but even the official service agent is telling me that's the way it's meant to be. I have been going through the citroen forum (I have 400+ pages to go through!) and I noted most (if not all) of you guys do change oil. I'll have to find someone who can handle that. Maybe I'll get it done when I have the hydraulic supply line replace.

If you're not in the UK, it may be that your driver's door mirror has "ADR spec" glass, which is non-curved. Apparently Australian drivers are too daft for trusting with a convex mirror.

Autobox definitely needs new solenoids if not fitted already, and the software update.

I'm in NZ. I heard about ADR on rear view mirror. The way it is, it seems a lot more dangerous with the blind spot than whatever shortcoming convex mirror has. Are you saying ADR does not allow convex mirror on both driver and passenger side? Mine has convex on passenger side only, which is puzzling.

Is there a way to check if the solenoid mod/software update has been done?

ADR only applied to the offside mirror; you'll find almost certainly it's an Oz-spec glass on there.

Here's a reasonably filtered search to get a curved replacement off UK Fleabay.

As to the 'box, Lexia will tell you what software version and date is in it, and the stored faults are a good indicator of whether solenoids are changed. New solenoids require the updated software, but the update can also be done with old solenoids still fitted.

Welcome :D

That's normal  It's a 'feature' of the 4HP20 and nothing to worry about at all. Knowing the circumstances in which it does it will help mitigate it; generally it happens when running fast to say, traffic lights and braking sharply to a halt. It's just the auto-adaptive electronics getting a little confused as to your intentions...

which means I have to adapt to how the gearbox behaves, rather than the other way around?

Oh yes, and ignore all I said about solenoids. That applies to the 4 cylinder's autobox.

As to learning how to drive the car's way, don't habitually feather the brakes. A lift off, good push on the anchors to make it clear you want to slow; downshift will happen and you'll get engine braking like a manual.

Mine does exactly the same. Had the car 4 months and still not figured out what's supposed to happen.

(and yes i've rtfm and still don't know whats going on!)
