PSA eyeing-up JLR ?

Post by white exec »

JLR have just posted a £3.6bn loss, and there are rumours that owners Tata have been in discussion with PSA about a sell-off.

Haven't PSA already over extended themselves with Opel/Vauxhaul ?

Surely taking on two fixer-uppers at once is a risky move ?

To be hoped that TATA don't do what they did with LDV, they just walked away and it collapsed with a loss of over 600 skilled jobs, then the Chinese came, swept up the bits and relaunched it in China.

LR in particular have a real problem
- lack of EVs
- preponderance of diesel
- evaporation of chunks of their luxury market (China will produce anything China wants)
Unless they get their skates on, they could find themselves with only a reduced niche market left.

The Guardian article seemed to suggest that the Vauxhall-Opel operation was not unprofitable.

Added to this, the Chinese only seem to want to buy their Land Rovers from the UK and not from their Chinese LR factories - what does that tell you?

Couple of quotes from the ancillary articles on the subject.
Jaguar Land Rover CEO denies holding talks over sale to Peugeot-Ralf Speth says he did not discuss possible tie-up with head of France’s PSA Group

but.....However, he declined to comment on whether Tata Motors had engaged in talks.

"“I think we are very well prepared [for electrification] as a British company in Britain,” Speth said.
Oh Dear.....

Sorry chaps but I did make an oblique reference to this some time ago. My immediate thought on 1st reading this story was: "Where's the money coming from?" - & the 2nd was "Shouldn't they really put their own house in order?"

Then there's the other 1/2 of the French motor industry's bid for world domination - Renault are sniffing round Chrysler, although it's actually part of Fiat, as opposed to be owned by them. Which will give them a 2nd bite at the cherry that is Jeep - & the full size van market stands to get get very confusing indeed.

Meanwhile JLR and BMW are cosy-ing up together
Jaguar Land Rover and BMW join forces on electric cars

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover said they will save costs through shared research, shared production planning, and by jointly buying electric car components.

Jaguar Land Rover is still run by former BMW managers, including Ralf Speth the company's chief executive who spent 20 years at BMW prior to joining JLR.
possibly good news for Wolverhampton
BMW has been developing an electric motor, transmission and power electronics in one housing that it calls "Gen 5" of its "eDrive" technology.

A joint team of BMW and JLR engineers in Munich will further develop this Gen 5 technology, then both companies will produce their own electric drivetrains, BMW said.

JLR will produce these drivetrains at its Wolverhampton plant, which employs 1,600 people.

I see Fiat Chrysler have walked away from the deal with Renault.

BMW have a long history with the Midlands, the first BMW car was an Austin 7 made under licence. :-D
