Painting and Polishing

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Everyone who has ever owned a car must have tried their hand at painting from touch-up, to panels to resprays, dent and scratch removal.

So with a bit of willing participation here's a thread to share your experiences/tips/products/good instructional videos/disasters.

My latest bargain basement purchase has this purely cosmetic problem. It would be nice to sort it out. Its "Silver Blade" Metallic Paint and it is defective in a couple of areas like this....

That's a strip back to bare metal and start again job Neil.

Watched a couple of you tube videos.....its where I go as a matter of course these days.

While this doesn't go back to bare metal, which as you say gibbo will have to be the start point for a repair I may do, it does address repair of "clear-coat" without using too many specialist tools other then the polisher at the end.

Yes its American and uses a fancy can of "K2 clear-coat", and the bloke is mildly irritating if you see some of his other vids

General question....has anyone done a decent DIY job on a bit of peeling "clear-coat" (or can we call it laquer?) :-D

Surely the answer can't be no.............

Everyone with an older car and the DIY gene will have made some attempt at a paint job on a car or motorbike.

My last painting escapade was years and years ago...........even pre-youtube but as said in the opening post my new acquisition could do with a bit of a cosmetic paint repair in a couple of areas where the "clear coat" has crazed and broken down and the paint beneath has faded and deteriorated.

Bearing in mind the bargain basement price of the car, it will not be going to the professionals to sort out, and I would be aiming for a reasonable job not a top notch quality job, and starting from zero...equipment wise..so unlikely that I will be investing in any expensive spraying or polishing equipment.

As gibbo said its start point will be a back to bare metal in the affected areas. Theres no filler on the panels and they are sound and rust free.

Roughly I have gleaned that this sort of layering applies

Bare Metal
Self-Etch or Epoxy Primer
Primer Coats
Base Colour Coats
Clear Coat Coats
Polishing and blending of Clear Coat.

No doubt myriads of products available, at various prices.

Epoxy primer appears to be number 1 for corrosion protection

Wonder if this is one of those occasions when the bargain basement paint job is best served by our friends at Halfords.

Grab four 500ml tins off the shelf Etch-primer/Primer/base colour/laquer and spend £40.

Even with my current level of skill with an aerosol can, has to be an improvement over how it is at the moment.

I didn't see what make your bargain basement car is but if it's Citroen I found that they do a kit of paint coded colour and lacquer aerosols for not much dosh, the primers from Halfords will do ok for a start.

What ever way you go, pay attention to the 6p's! Far too many times I've ruined paint projects by rushing!
Silver is apparently The worst colour to match, but with a small hvlp paint gun and compressor you can get a good finish! I can't remember who I bought my last lot through, but a litre of clear' rfu' and an hvlp gun was under £35, i use it mostly for painting bikes, but have done a quick touch up on pops car,

And I thought for sure the fcf Hive would know the 6ps! :-D Proper, Preperation, Prevents, P#ss, Poor, Performance.... 😂
Hvlp - High Volume Low Pressure
Rfu - Ready for use - although I still thin it down some...

I would say that has been put on to thick and in hot weather....top layer dried to quick, or, over a colour coat that had not dried...

Thanks Alasdair, having seen some of the pictures of your own vehicles, I would regard you as one of the FCF Guru's on polishing and painting.

With the Micra, I still havent got round to spending £40 at Halfords on the various cans needed to etch, prime, base coat and clear coat it, although I have primed myself for the task, with a few youtube videos should I ever get round to it.
