Garages Gallery-Ancient and Modern

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Yesterdays POTD on Geograph was The former Rootes Group Garage Mill Lane Maidstone Kent. Its listed so thankfully as far as I know hasn't been turned into flats. No it appears its bang on topic for the French Car Forum being occupied by a Peugeot dealership. Maybe the most interesting Peugeot Garage in the UK

I have peppered the FCF with some of my photos of garages lost in other threads but I intend to dig some out and re-post them here. I do like an old garage, but there is some interest in modern ones too. Like the Mercedes Advent Calendar Garage at this time of year in Munich :-D

This is the last place I worked in Brum, although not as I knew it.

Steve - What a lovely BBC site, and such terrific photography!
Davie and I stopped at the Applecross community filling area last year - to use the adjacent 'facilities' 8-[.
Thanks for posting that.

It popped up this morning - I thought it looked like Eric Morecambe in the photo.

Well worth a look and memories for those of my age, kneeling with a dipstick to check the tanks, small margins, small capacity tanks that as they age bring on the 'safety' rules, testing annually for leaks by shutting down for two days sealing and pressurising the tanks with a pressure gauge, any drop in pressure and they're shut down for good, the pumps annual electrical safety checks etc. etc.

Customers who come in and buy a gallon to get them to the supermarket for a fill up at the lower price, a price that the small filling station can't get at wholesale from the petrol companies.

No wonder they're all gone.

..and they have very much so here in Northumberland. Just over the border, there is a new fuel installation in the small town (well out in the sticks) of Newcastleton. Probably heavily reliant on a bit of grant funding to get it off the ground, and small in scale, and a community venture.

This is it

I think this one is still in existance in Upton-upon-Severn in Worcestershire, may even have had a mention somewhere on the FCF. Edit Yes, thought so here it is courtesy of Puxa!

There was a bit of a spat I discover when the great and the good of Upton-upon-Severn a few years ago, branded the garage as an "Eyesore" and attempted to get Mr Pane to smarten up his garage. I liked his quoted response as he ignored their pleas.
from "The Press"
THE owner of a garage branded an eyesore and a “blot” on Upton says he has no interest what anyone else thinks and will paint the property “when he is good and ready”.

And when the Malvern Gazette contacted Mr Panes about the concerns he said: “We are not in the slightest bit interested in them (the town council) or what anybody else thinks.”

Mr Panes also told the Gazette: “When we are ready to paint it and we have the time then we will do it.”

Another transport artist, Mike Jeffries, and one who is in the £4,000 for an original bracket.

Very nice painting of Exminster Garage and a Jaguar XK120, and petrol on sale from Shell/ BP/ and Esso. The equivalent of a free-house in the Pub Trade maybe or artistic licence?

Had me wondering whether Exminster Garage was fictional............

Maybe not could well be this

One of the cars for sale at Mathewsons at the weekend was a MGC GT originally supplied by Mumfords Garage at Plymouth.

Discovered this article on Plymouth Garages, including Mumfords (with pic of "Pans People")
