The survey certainly was thought-provoking, really interesting questions. Never really thought of it all broken down before, just body image as a whole.

Thank you everyone for your help and comments.. such varied comments. Thanks Iain for posting on and giving us the link to the other forum.
I don't think she envisaged such reactions and helpfulness form everyone.
She has a self imposed end date of the 31st Jan, to allow plenty of time for analysis and has assured me that she will send me her results so that I can share them with you.
Her aim was to get 300 surveys. She currently has about 400 which started, (some started and didn't carry on past the mid point but some completed but didn't click the NEXT button at the bottom of the page so it didn't register as complete, she may be able to use those)and about 295 fully completed.
Thank you again for your help. What a great forum this is!

The dissertation is now finished. Very interesting and surprising stuff. A huge thank you to everyone who participated.. In the end it turned out that she needed the participation of all of us "old codgers" as all the previous studies done on this were looking at a much younger and smaller sample. I've enclosed her "conclusion" pages and If youre interested in the full report drop me a pm with your email and I'll send it to you. Thanks again, Chris and Robyn.
CONCLUSION
Overall, the existing literature strongly indicates a correlation between aspects of psychological well-being and body image attitudes (Olivardia et al 2004; Ochner, Grey and Brickner 2009). However, the majority of these findings examine a female population, or compare male and female body attitudes using the same concept of body image. Yet, further research strongly suggests that men and women do not share the same ideals of body image and therefore these previous findings may be considered inaccurate (Franzoi and Shields 1984). In the recent decade, there has been an increasing amount of research conducted examining these factors with solely a male population sample, (Tager 2006; Fawkner and McMurray 2002; Mellor et al 1010) although these samples consist mostly of college students with a limited number of participants. There has been research conducted into types of psychological well-being relating to aspects of body image for example, Bergeron and Tylka (2007), found that dissatisfaction of muscularity, body fat and height were all components associated with low self-esteem, psychological distress and depressive symptomatology. However, there is very little research that investigates the general mental state of males in relation to their over-all body image satisfaction. An extension of these two variables would be age, as yet again, there is limited research that examines both male body image satisfaction and male psychological well-being over a life time. As previously stated the research that focuses on male body image is often restricted to college students is limited in men over the age of 40 (Fredrick and Essayli 2016). This is particularly problematic as both men and women over the age of 40 continuously experience changes to their physical appearance in terms of hair loss, increase in weight and the deterioration of skin (Andres 1989). This suggests that body image satisfaction would decrease with age however there is little research to support this. Regarding age and levels of psychological well-being, most research is mixed between men and women and suggests that there is U-shape pattern of well-being in a life cycle. Blanchflower and Oswald (2008) examined this U-shape and concluded that an individual’s happiness becomes most deflated in middle age, in concordance with Stone et al’s (2010) study that found well-being levels decrease before the age of 50 and after 50 increases again. However, these studies focus on general or hedonic well-being and seem to focus less on eudaimonic well-being. Ryff and Keyes (1995) examine aspects of eudaimonic factors but not eudaimonic well-being as a whole. Therefore, this dissertation study has critically examined the relationships between body image satisfaction, psychological well-being and age in a male sample. An online questionnaire was employed to three hundred and twenty-six male respondents between the ages of 18 and 78. It consisted of three psychometric scales; The Body Esteem Scale (Franzoi and Sheilds 1984), the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (Tennant 2007) and, the Questionnaire for Eudaimonic Well-Being (Waterman 2010), each one chosen to address the experimental hypotheses. Results suggest a strong and significant positive correlation between body image satisfaction and psychological well-being however there was no conclusion drawn for the causation of this relationship, an issue which may benefit with further research. Results also suggest significant differences of psychological well-being between ages, with men aged 46 and over displaying the highest levels. The limitations recommend a further breakdown of age in the oldest category for a more in-depth analysis. The second hypothesis was rejected which found no significant differences between age and body image satisfaction, which Franzoi et al’s (2012) study suggests that it is due to men’s self-serving bias, which may explain the lack of effect between age and body image satisfaction. Nevertheless, the current research was limited to one body image scale whereas it would be beneficial to further analyse this experimental question with multiple scales. This would allow for broader body image concept across all ages and a more in-depth analysis of body image aspects that may be affected by age.
In the face of the limitations, this research study has provided a statistical analysis of the associations between the overall body image satisfaction, general psychological well-being and age in a male sample. It has provided a substantial and wide range of participants, which limit previous research and addresses aspects of the increasing interest in the male physique and mental health. It is hoped that the findings of this research study will aid in the expansion and guidance for future studies.

Chris,

Big kudos to Robyn, to do that and be dyslexic is bloody brilliant!

I've had to bookmark it to read later as my poor old brain is not up to it at this time of day; it's something I can only read and digest properly early in the morning...

Excellent news. Glad I was able to assist in whatever small way I could.
