That piece on ICA was from "Commercial Motor" 15th January 1954.

Below it was this other short article which included a quaint little phrase
ELECTRICS TO SAVE PETROL

ECONOMY in the use of petrol by municipal transport is being urged by a committee of Ramsgate Town Council, who have approved a proposal to employ electric street orderlies. These will cost £460 each, enable staff to be cut from 24 to 16, and save £2,000 a year.

It is suggested that they can also be used for other purposes, such as conveying materials from the works depot to jobs en route to streets to be swept.
Whatever happened to the electric street orderly?

Oh and in my efforts to find out what one of those was I came across a fascinating fact about a street in Brixton, and a well known song......see the PE Jukebox for details...

Well these are still here today....pretty much every mile for about 6 miles or so on the A696 but a bit of a relic from a bygone age

Can you remember how you bought cars before e-bay, gumtree, and autotrader, and the French Car Forum!

Thursday night's evening chronicle of course, jam packed full of private car adverts, most drafted into the max number of characters/words to succinctly describe the car for sale. Then of course for the more adventurous...exchange and mart.

So there was the over reliance on the abbreviation

ffsr----factory fitted sunroof
fsh......full service history
mint........uses less characters than immaculate!

and the warnings

no tyre kickers
first to see will buy
be quick

Have to see if I can dig out a typical page refresh my memory.

Discovered this in my quest to bring up a page of old car adverts from the Evening Chronicle. The 70's were different times. You just couldn't imagine a top premiership footballer today advertising beer on the side of the Gateshead Army Surplus store!

"Evening Echo" in our case !! I described the first car I sold back in 1988, as "Clean", a 1256 HC Viva; should've put me off Vauxhalls for life, but I had a couple more before the penny dropped.... I only used to keep em a few weeks back then.

In later years, I realised when I attempted to sell a Lancia Beta (one of these) that people were getting around the fact that eBay didn't exist, by 'Drive By Viewing' it. It was the early 90's and I wanted £50 for a Lancia Beta, this style..... it drove lovely and would've been lovely if more of the lower bodywork still existed
Beta.jpg
We saw lots of strange cars drive up & down our quiet street the day that was in the 'paper, with very few knocks at the door; I hid it around the corner after a while, and it eventually went to someone for its lump.

I was about to ask what the proper 'Title' is for one of these but the default tag for the pic I found on Google gave it away, a "Beta Berlina". Mine was a 1981, 2.0 Auto; I kicked down the 4 speed auto over-enthusiastically one day at maybe 40mph.... it dropped to 2nd and took off mightily impressively; famously good engines in their day!

Love the Beta Berlina that just looks lovely (you may like this one in what looks like avocado :-D ). The newest car I have ever owned to date was a Lancia Beta Coupe. Much maligned of course but I just love the shape, turns my head to this day. This is a lovely example of what I mean...its just gorgeous in my eyes :-D

I sold a lot of those Lancias, they were fine cars if you could manage the rust, the problem the beta had was that they bolted the front subframe to a single skin floor which rusted away and let the engine drop to the ground.
I think I may already have told the tale of my mates coupe, like the blue one pictured, he left it on my sales sight for quite a long time then decided to dump it in the Thursday evening auction at Leominster.

What he didn't realise was that the sun roof had leaked and filled the drivers seat with water which had frozen solid, he drove the 49 miles to the auction sitting on an ice block and could hardly get out of the car at the end.

odd really Neil [call me odd, you’d not be far from the truth], but I'd rather have the bigger Berlina. On paper, would seem ridiculous, but prefer the styling of the Coupe.

That rather ‘unfortunate’ shade of 70's bathroom Avocado actually suits it doesn’t it....

...reminded of my Primary School headmaster, he had one in black, same colour as his skin (that was rare too, back then!); didn't suit it. Loved the styling tho' even then, as a nipper; a world away from your Escort Mk1's & 2's, Allegro's & Viva's.

Talking of school... me thinks the Beta Coupe in your photo needed the toilet ! :-D

Strangely enough, in the course of googling the Beta Berlina, I saw a front-on shot of it beside a CX, the difference in styling from that angle is far from 'Chalk & Cheese'

I did have a look through the 'back posts' see if I could get the Thread Back 'On Topic' but sadly not.

Difficult to go off topic on this one, just preface anything with the phrase "Remember these?" :-D

Remember these.........Avocado Cars

a rather gorgeous P6 last of the production line.

Sandtoft - lucky you: somwhere I'd love to visit. I have a very soft spot for Trolleybuses, having grown up with them in west London.
