On my walk.

Post by Gibbo2286 »

One of my neighbours who's a regular rambler suggested I go a different way for a walk round the village, he said he thought there was a Citroen like mine in a field although he wasn't sure.

So I took his advice and followed the footpath signs and sure enough there's an 06 C5 automatic estate in the long grass, a tidy car, silver with the driver's window wound down, inside there's a lot of nuts and bolts in a tray as though someone made a start and gave up.

Nobody about so no idea who owns it or what's the score.

Now that sounds interesting. Relatively speaking that's a newish car. I've seen quite a few series 2 autos for sale spares repairs. Not so good as the series 1?

I wonder if it's electrical? I had an 07 plate 207 sitting scrapped on my driveway for months...

I'm of the belief now that electrical problems is now likely to be the biggest cause of modern car fatalities...

Touch-wood, my 207 is OK now but it came very close to being reprocessed into bean cans and cheap spanners...

Looking at the bits sitting in the front I'd guess it was something mechanical, maybe the autobox, I'll try and find out more tomorrow.

I must make a mental note of all the wrecks and scrappers I see rotting in gardens and on driveways on my runs around the town.

Off-hand I don't see many but can think of a BMW of some sort and a Pug 206 that look like they've not moved since Noah was a lad...

There's also some rather interesting car-shaped lumps under tarpaulins too... One I know is a Moggie Minor and the other appears to be a VW Beetle amongst a collection of MX-5s, some of which may or may not be roadworthy...

I'll run with new eyes from now on and see what I can spot...

While this part of the country is supposedly somewhat depressed in comparison with the south, I haven't seen an abandoned car for years.

Your locals are picking them up and weighing them in for scrap money. :)

For a time when the used motor trade was dying on its feet I made quite a good living by running an ad series in the local rag, '£20 paid for your scrap car' I'd pick them up two at a time with my recovery truck and tow dolly, salvage any useful saleable parts and weigh the rest in.

Completely rained off yesterday but had a walk round there again this morning, can't find the owner but a neighbour says he works in Bristol and bring s part exchanges home, sometimes fixes them and if not they get weighed in for scrap.
Had a look at the MOT history online, last MOT and tax June 2014 at 64320 miles.

Steering wheel looks a bit furry... Clearly been static/out of use for some time then...

Shame really as it looks quite a sound car...

That looks like a newer version of the scene with the 405 Mi16 sat in long grass near us, complete with driver's window wound down (not smashed) for long enough that moss has grown on the seat!

I'll try & remember to post the pics when I get them on the laptop, there's even a Mk1 Pajero near the 405. (doesn't happen to be a 4x4 Mondeo and a Lancia Lybra there too does there, to complete the "updated" match with the Ghia X and Dedra at "our" spot?) :D

I actually enjoy finding/looking round (sometimes saving) abandoned cars and keep a mental note of the ones I know locally, most are longer-term stood & older models like the hoard above, Mk4 escort, Mk2 fiestas, a Xantia, an AX, Rover 400 etc but there has been a few dumped in the last couple of years too (presumably the scrap prices dropped enough to make it less worthwhile to weigh in?) and they include a half-burned Jag S type, 04 Fiat Punto, an 02 Vectra and the 14 plate(!) Honda motorbike I rescued a few months ago.
Plus in January, an MGF, Honda CRV, some import people carrier and another Fiat I think, which all appeared on a local car park within a few days. They've now gone sadly, carted off by the land owner but I would've rescued the MG possibly :(
