I must be fortunate I have never had that problem, I don't mind a little haggling but I have never lost much and I do the same when I'm buying except on my last 406 which was priced at £350 and was worth every penny and more, there was a rush for it but I got there first 8-)

Had some epic timewasters while the Skoda was on Gumtree.

Once I get that sold, the eventual Cherokee on the drive I really reckon that I'll be done with mucking around buying and selling. It used to be quite fun, but not any more.

Especially with the nonsense with road tax not carrying over etc which just makes it a complete pain in the proverbial.

When i get a gumtree message just "500" , absolutely no words with it i reply 1000.
Tonights numptie offered the asking price if i could get it to manchester by 9pm. That was at 6.30. This must be the most amount of idoits that i have ever had reply to a gumtree ad.

Not sure what the problem with the road tax not carrying over is. I find it quite handy.

Get green slip. Go online. Tax car. Less than 5 mins of a job that you can do there and then. No post office queues or stern suspicious post-mistresses to deal with. Easy.

Yeah, you might lose a couple of quid but... the convenience, not having to use fuel, park, queue in the post office and knowing the car doesn't have a fake tax disc and is taxed is worth that few quid IMO.

I prefer the road tax the way it is now too. I do it all online, including the registering the new owner. Its done instantly, no hassle, no paper, no stamp, give the buyer the green slip and bin/burn/shred the v5!

Yes but sometimes you want a car home to put in bed for repairs. ie you don't want to tax it right away.

That is a problem Lexi, could buy a car today, a week before the end of the month, to take it home intending putting it on the road on 1st May. I did that with the 205, it was on a sorn, I bought it and drove it home without taxing it. Had I been stopped by the polis I was going to say I couldn't get mobile Internet or a post office and I will tax it in the morning. Would it have worked or would I have been booked? We will never know!

Problem I've had twice now is not being able to tax the car there and then because the insurance database seems to randomly take forever to update. So when the DVLA do the "is it insured?" check their computer says no and they won't let me tax it... Despite me having the certificate, printed more than 24 hours ago, in my hand...

I've had, the owner has not informed us of the sale so no tax.
Davie I rather think you'd have been fined and had the car taken if you'd been caught. Well unless you'd booked an MOT and there's nothing to stop you doing that, even if it has 12months. I've been taken to court by dvla for no tax when travelling to a prebooked mot. It was a battle of several months and only dropped when I made legal threats against their prosecutor for wasting my time and harrasment
