Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
I've just found this picture hiding in a dusty corner...
Brought back a few memories of the car I most regret ever getting rid of...
This was taken at FCS 2005..
The only other car I ever regret parting with was my MG Metro Turbo....
Any other memories of cars you wish you'd never let go of?

Just about to follow the Duoro into Portugal, summer 1999
1989 BX19RD Bought with 45k on clock, and taken to 177k. Towed and drove all over Europe. Numerous small mods and tweaks to electrics, dash, cooling, lighting. We both miss her a great deal. Shunted into a corner, and left there for a couple of years when we bought the XM in January 1999. Mistake: she mouldered spectacularly with lack of use. Still wince when I see Citroens 'stored' on grass! Do miss the glorious simplicity and supple, long-travel suspension - and those fabulous headlights.

A BX in its natural habitat!
The BX was always regarded as a most excellent towcar and I recall when the BX was discontinued. The wails of anguish from the towing fraternity was deafening and for a long while there was great sadness...
I used to tow a caravan with a Xantia and that was a bloody excellent tug so I can well see the BX was a good 'un...

I've towed extensively with two c5 hdi, a 2.2 136 and a 2.0 138 and they rank as the best, most stable motors I have ever towed with. I see no reason why the earlier cars with hydraulics would be any different.

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
205 D-Turbo, H plate. Mine for seven years of fun from 2003 to 2010.
Only pic I have to hand unfortunately.
Full DT Spec: Vacuum roof (no leaks) , grey velour sports seats (quite similar to the STDT ones in design) , usual electrics inside, GTi type black dash (factory fitted!) , only thing missing was PAS really and possibly remote locking. It was heavy steering even on the standard wheels and with a recon rack too, despite copious lubrication of the steering UJ. Oh well. It was a small price to pay for the 'fun' from the nicely setup 1.8TD unit.
I did not get around to doing these although I looked into the PAS but I could not find a PAS column at the time as they are a fraction shorter in length that the non-PAS ones. Shame as I had a PAS rack to hand. Oh well.
Potentially valuable reg on it too, last MOT expired May 2012. Shame as I'd replaced the fuel pipes (with OEM parts, nasty to bend!) the year before I sold it, along with a new clutch too.

Interesting that this topic already has 2 205s in it. Both sadly missed and regretted...

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
It's going tomorrow. I will buy another, I will be looking for a d turbo or STDT in the near future, must have power steering. I don't want to sell it, but what's the point of keeping a car which is no use to me as it causes too much pain driving it due to both my thumbs not working correctly.

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
PAS Standard on (UK spec) STDT models. D-Turbo models (real ones) optional. Later 'Mardi Gras' models "L" reg onwards (all diesels with / without turbo) and 1.6 auto have PAS. 1.1 does not (in UK RHD form)daviemck2006 wrote:It's going tomorrow. Hope that helps your choice.
Rare: STDT in that grey colour my DT was in. More common in dark green / gold.

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
A mardi gras would do me then. The only real must have is power steering, and would prefer a 3 door. I did look into getting power steering retro fitted to my 1.1 but I didn't look very hard before I decided I would be better off selling it and buying another.

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
Mardi Gras (later ones as mentioned) are offered with all engine types in both 3 and 5 door. Summary is:
1.1
1.6Auto (XU engine not TU)
1.8D
1.8TD
PAS on all apart from 1.1. Sunroof compulsory it seems ( )
LHD later 1.1 models can occasionally have PAS its via the 106 / Saxo style 'electric pump' method. I have info on later (not imported to UK) models I collected a while back out of curiosity. Summary is no UK spec 1.1 has PAS.
Mardi Gras 1.8D easy (ish) to find 1.8TD not so easy.

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
A 3 door mardi gras 1.8D would do me then, relatively cheap yet, but they will go up in price quicker than a 1.1 5 door will. I've seen gti advertising for up to 20 grand now. I bet when Jim finds out that's the value of a genuine unabused mint example is worth he will have babies lol

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
My wife's favourite was our BX TZD Estate, she could beat most cars away, eventually my son had it and someone ran into the back and wrote it off.
My favourite car of all time was my CX25 DTR Turbo Safari, I did about 160,000 miles in it, not driven anything like it since.

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
I know I have spoke of 205's here, but the car I most regret selling was a 1985 B plate vauxhall cavalier 1.6 gls. It was a lovely car that I bought at 2 years old and sold it due to getting married and buying a house a year later. Sorry it's a vauxhall, but they made good cars then.

Re: Memories of Past Cars Sadly Gone...
I don't think I've ever regretted selling any car, if I think about it seriously. Perhaps my Impreza, if I had to choose one. I'll have another at some point but a later one with better seats and a more friendly gearbox!
