I had cause to visit Blyth yesterday, second visit, last one was 24 years ago, don't get about much :)
I was down near the docks and on the way home drove down the quayside and was very impressed with dozens of huge cable reels loitering there.
No camera but there are a few pictures of some of them here:

Not as impressive as driving past dozens upon dozens of them a few yards from the car but gives an indication of the scale of them.

My contribution for today.

The question (for those who don't know my fleet anyway): What year was this photo taken?

Framing that to keep all the modern tat parked around here out of view was quite a challenge.
Current fleet:

There's a lot of that yellow 'cable' being used around here, it's actually plastic gas main pipe, they're installing gas in some of the places that have never had it before and replacing the old rotted out iron piping in the rest.
There's also a new trunk gas main being installed from the Welsh coast over the Cotswolds, might even be finished, comment on it has gone quiet since the greenies stopped squealing.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

There is, I think, an international colour code for buried pipes/cables/trunking etc...
water - blue
gas - yellow
electricity - red
data/comms - purple
green is something, can't remember what

Good to see old windmills being recycled for pipe/cable laying.
You can't beat the reel thing

While I wouldn’t claim to know your fleet first hand, like many others on the FCF I do enjoy your blog the detail pictures and videos are excellent. I would say the year was about 200 years after the agreement to use the 49 th parallel for the largest part of the United States northern Border. :)

One for Neil -
What's the connection between the 49th Parallel and a car maker?

Very educational the FCF,
I sort of picked up a valid answer to that question without looking it up :-D Karlsruhe in Germany is on the 49th parallel and low and behold.... birthplace of Karl Benz.

Not Having a what do you know about Derbyshire thread? The Derwent Reservoir played an important role in Operation Chastise so on the anniversary of that event a contemporary report from the Derby Evening Telegraph seems appropriate...

Derwent Reservoir was where 617 Squadron were practising their bombing runs, prior to using the "Upkeep" bombs.

I should have remembered this without the clue, as the film "The Dam Busters" was shown on Monday on Film 4.
