Ah, that was just a throwaway question Jim not intended to be a head scratcher! :-D I am quite happy for you to give out a clue to make it even more obvious. I mean how many New Forest settlements have a Pub called "The Mailman's Arms" next door to a ???????/???????? car showroom, which won the ??????? car showroom of the Year!

You could supply the marques, without giving too much more away!

Double off-topic but this seems the most likely place to drop this, just seen it on autoshite and I'm sure some of you will find it interesting (Jim?)

Steve, thanks for posting that video :) I was spellbound... It is truly excellent!

The engineers looked incredibly fit and healthy... Not an ounce of excess fat anywhere...

The atmosphere conveyed in that film is just magical :)

I've seen a few of these British Transport films now, often on BBC4 'Timeshift' and they are all most enjoyable...

They've enjoyed very critical acclaim over the years... I believe the last one was made in 1976...

POTD......First day

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Right up my street those films :-D Liked the big spanner with a couple of people turning it and the removal of the large bolt which again took a few of them to carry :-D

....So, it’s the first day of the new month....would be nice to have a few pictures of the day to commemorate the occasion...

You wouldn't want a careless guy on the top dropping either on your head. :) Those old Scammells did some work didn't they.

Lovely old 1957 promotional film for the Scarab Mechanical Horse.
It goes on a bit, but there's some cracking old footage in it :)

Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

It would be a shame to conclude Scammell's first appearance on POTD just with a couple of Pics.

There's always a few fascinating facts/trivia to be uncovered, and wiki is a treasure trove and its links within the articles lead on to others

Lets go for 6!
Starting point https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scammell
  1. It started out in 1888 as "G.Scammell and Nephew" Spittalfields London
  2. The new firm built a new factory at Tolpits Lane, Watford, next to Watford West railway station
  3. The Factory is now demolished and the site is now the home of Camelot!
  4. In 1934, Scammell produced the three-wheeled Mechanical Horse, designed by Oliver North to replace horses in rail, postal and other delivery applications.
  5. A French Car relevant fact...... French Firm Chenard-Walcker-FAR, under licence from Scammell built their version the "Pony Mechanique" and slapped in a Citroen Traction Avant motor
  6. In the 1940's the mechanical horse was succeded by the Scarab. The Scarab name was a combination of SCAmmell and ARAB refering to the Arab Horses used on the railways previously, and not due to its resemblance to the scarab beetle
If nothing else its my first ever use of the "List" syntax :-D Like writing with boxing gloves on!

POTD-The 2-Stroke Deisel..

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

I like an old advert, so curiosity wondered what Scammell had to offer in the advert department. As old adverts appeal to me 100% more than current offerings was looking for an old one.

Then as part of the random hit up came an advert for a Commer.

The unusual bit....highlighting its 2-stroke deisel engine. Pardon my ignorance everyone, I had never heard of such a beast!

Here's the advert

The Napier Deltic is a two-stroke diesel...

The Commer diesel, in common with all other 2-stroke diesels, was supercharged...

The supercharger is essential and without they won't run...

That Commer TS3 was a fabulous truck, you could hear it coming from a fair distance away from its turbo scream and its horizontally opposed piston engine, the only British truck accepted by the US trucking industry at the time.
