POTD anything for Oct 1st?

This is what it looked like before it was painted white! Jim if you want detail its all here. Those Steam Locos were the lifeblood of the steelworks at Corby before "dieselisation". The particular one in the photo is Works number 14 Makers Number 3827 Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0ST purchased by Corby Urban District Council for installation in West Glebe Park as a childrens' attraction, subsequently moved to the Country park and no doubt surounded by warning notices now not to climb on it! The yellow livery with red highlights was standard for the steam locos at the Corby works. This livery was adopted to make them more easily visible in the works, but owing to the dirty conditions which erode the paint, the colour gradually deteriorates to a "steelworks black".

Excellent stuff Gentlemen :-D , a case of "ask and you shall receive". The more posters the merrier as far as I am concerned, and the pics always have a story behind them to delve into! Top quality in both posts.

And another batch which might interest FCF members. A coupe of R4s, Dyanes including one in Jaune Mimosa like our T reg one but very rare in France and Belgium because it was so close to Post Office Van yellow, a 2CV cunningly parked under a faded sign which says "no parking, falling stones", a Citroenistas wet dream of an immaculate restored 2CV - even clean under the wheel arches on a trailer behind an immaculate C5 X7 (shot on the usual Lyon autoroute 40 minute jam, must remember to use A46 next time), and a curiosity of a German registered TR - 2a? not an expert - on the Gorge d'Ardeche road.

Enjoy.

Excllent crop Richard, have spent holidays in and around the Gorges du Verdon beautiful.

Have canoed and swum in this bit, and watched the kamikaze locals plunge in off the rocks!

I would say that the Triumph looks like a TR3A 1958 ish to me comparing it to pics from Simon Cars.

Yes, must be losing my grip - TR2 didn't have full width grille. At least I knew it wasn't a TR7! Saw a TR7 shell and its engine on the test rig at Abingdon (Leyland ST) when I went in to buy my Maxi rally springs all those years ago. Tony Pond car.

Neil, that's excellent :) I knew you'd come up with all the answers :D

Should have realised it was all connected with Corby Steelworks given the close proximity but when I'm doing cycle sportives I leave my brain at home

Richard, an excellent collection. Very enjoyed 8-)

Here is one for Jim.
Walked past this at an antiques market today. A glance said that it was a far-eastern pastiche...

Walked on a few metres, then went back and looked a bit harder...

I think that it is a genuine article, but I can't find any on the internet with the full makers name in that typeface.

I intended to ask the price, but got distracted when a friend recognised me and wanted a chat, then it started raining, and then I was late home for lunch. I will ask if I see it again.

S.Smith and Sons do have a wiki paragraph at least, and could fit the bill. The company evolved into Smiths which is a FTSE 100 Company
from Wiki page on Smiths Group https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smiths_Group
History
S Smith & Sons
This remained the business's name from foundation until 1967. This watch chronometer and instrument makers business was established by Samuel Smith in London in 1851. Their premises were in The Strand and they were watchmakers to the Admiralty.

This clock looks quite similar and is described thus

"A fine single fusee eight day duration dial clock with 16 inch circular white painted dial. Fine mahogany case with side door and door to bottom. case of good colour and patination"

http://www.pendulumofmayfair.co.uk/products/684/b.jpg

Regards Neil

and what is a fusee?

One of these, the cone shaped thing.

Fusees are beautiful Neil... It's a good alternative to the corded weights as seen in long-case clocks such as grandfathers and much more elegant than the captive coiled springs that came later...

And less lethal than the aforementioned springs too!!!

Wow at the price of the restored one (£2650)!

The market where I saw the one I photographed normally has stuff less than a 10th of that price.
