Citroen Car Club.....What's the point ?

Post by Stickyfinger »

Needs asking....really who thinks that club is good/bad/should run Labour Party Leadership elections ?

I have a new prime example of why I do not "do clubs"

Why, what have they done now?
Any organisation or group becomes very political, more so the longer its established I think.

Fair enough, I'm not involved at all and I haven't renewed my subscription over the last year or so for varying reasons, they seem to be very involved in meetings and member interaction with lots or regional and national make specific shows.

I know the triumph stag owners club is more geared at making money and commissioning manufacturing of parts that are no longer available, this would get me back in the fold but to be fair its not something such a generic club could pull off.

To be fair the club doesn't interest me much, the forums are a lot more usefull, lively and honest place to be IMO.

Yeah I'm baffled too. Is "open topic" meant to be a link?

Personally I've tried a years membership and not renewed as it didn't make running the car easier which was the idea. Nothing against them though, just prefer the forum.

A gentle reminder...
The moderators would like not to have clean up a mess if this thread gets out of hand.
Please don't post anything that could be construed as a personal attack.
Also remember that many forum members are (presumably) also happy members of the CCC, and the members of this forum often benfit from CCC organised events, whether members or not.

If you feel discussing the CCC here is inappropriate then please feel free to delete the question/thread....I would not be offended nor upset by the action and would quite understand. Such an action would not need an explanation.

I would hope the principles of car clubs could be discussed without personal attacks or old broken relationships hashed over.
I would hope the reasons to join or leave could also be discussed. The advantages/benefits, the structure etc etc
If it is a personality clash etc, that is easy to cover/dismiss as "personal".

As one observation, it seems totally "fractured"

I exchanged membership of a "marque" club for that of one with very loose affiliations. Basically a group of people who are united in their like of driving other than commonplace cars.

Three years in, I'm still very happy. It was a simpler approach than changing the course of my former club.

Not getting involved in the discussion about a topic I know nothing about, not being party to any real knowledge about the club in question...

In answer to the question of "what's the point" I assume in being a member, I used to be a member of the Saab and Lada owners clubs, and found that quite a few of the specialist classic car insurers gave discounts to club members. Remember on the Saab in particular that the discount was a considerable amount more than the membership fee.

In the days before the internet connecting everything and anything, tended to be a useful way of tracking down someone who has that elusive spare part, though forums like this have made that an order of magnitude easier than it was even ten years ago. Likewise for getting heads up of relevant shows in your areas.

...really need to renew my SOC membership...or at least take the sticker out the window!

I see things appear on facebook with an almost regular occurrence about some clubs/groups and the CCC has fallen into this category in the last year with a very long thread on the last attempt at a national rally/weekend thingy.

I didn't go or have first hand experience but from what i read quite a lot of members/people were disappointed that with such a club there was a huge reliance and target audience of the 'old guard' as one member put it, at a huge sacrifice to younger/the next generation of members.
Now dont get me wrong i wasn't there so dont know, but i can only say if they aren't embracing the communications methods of the day or asking some of the more knowledgeable on the subject about it then its not going to help the member numbers/quality long term. they need to really embrace new technologies more just like the next generation are embracing the chevrons of yesteryear and ask for experienced help with their issues this also works the other way.

They are not alone in this as ive seen other clubs and groups try to resist the changes that are afoot in the world but what is Citroens core mantra really? embracing new technologies no matter how whacky they seem at the time(albeit the modern Pug run company is driving it away from its best ideas ;)

The CCC have the forum which is good, are you talking about getting down with the kids on Fb and the like?

It is very easy to criticise any wrongdoings but your not going to please everyone, the club mag is very good but maybe the format a little outdated, I enjoyed mine but it was like reading the blog section of the forum, one per car. Still the CCC will continue and evolve as new faces move through and the members start looking for different things out of the club, new ideas and changes will come and should not be forced.

I was an active member of the CCC for several years, wrote the monthly Xantia column and participated in organising the DS rally at Little Horwood for a couple of years but left after what KP accurately refers to as the "old guard" or more specifically certain members of the old guard seriously peed me off a couple of times. For me the club is being held back by certain committee members who appear to run the club as if it's for their exclusive benefit and have a pretty much complete disregard for anything/anyone new. The final straw for me was when a couple of the old guard spoke to me as if I was something stuck on the bottom of their shoe, their comments were so downright rude my daughter who would have been not much older than her early teens even remarked to me at the time about it. As I'd put far more into the club than I ever got out of it I simply left them to it.

I've been a member of other single marque/model clubs and I'm presently a member of "The Mercedes-Benz Club" which for me is like chalk and cheese compared to the CCC, the forum has far more knowledgeable members plus membership gives you complete access to the factory workshop manuals and parts system, just like the CCC I receive a monthly magazine plus quarterly a magazine directly from Mercedes in Germany. Socially there is far more going on in the Mercedes club with what is clearly a much larger club so obviously easier to plan. I'm also good friends with the chairman of the Volvo Owners Club and comparing the number of members between clubs the CCC appears to be seriously lacking in that department, surely there must be as many old Citroens around as there old Volvos so why is the membership of the CCC so low, I of course have my own thoughts, what about others?

I think a lot of the issues are related to PSA themselves, would they hand out diagrams, parts catalogues or even give spares that would be binned to the owners club?, no. They put them in the skip. Ford, BMW and Mercedes see their classic car following as a sector worth investing in and Citroen do not.

This makes it very hard for any owners club to provide a usefull technical service.

I don't know who runs the CCC or the ins and outs of the inevitable politics that goes on within the organisation, I try to steer clear of that sort of nonsense but I don't think it is as harmful as the lack of interest PSA shows in its heritage.
