Was there ever a 6 Speed XUD?

Post by Zelandeth »

Random question I've meant to ask for a while now.

The one observation both me and my other half have made is that especially on motorways that my Xantia (XUD9TE engine) could easily handle another gear. Would no doubt improve economy and cut down on the engine drone which seems to annoyingly peak at exactly 70mph.

I'm sure that it was only the later engines that got the six speed box (first I think I remember ever seeing was a Pug 306 2.0 Turbo D...which I also recall acceletating like a scalded cat, the first car I would ever have described as "hot" diesel in performance terms).

Can anyone confirm if I'm right? Assume as well that the Turbo D/HDi boxes don't fit on an XUD as that would be too easy.

...honestly not about to go box swapping, this is purely in the interests of my own curiousity.

No Xantia or 306/406 Diesel got a six-speed gearbox. Only the 306 GTi-6 got one.

Shame. Would make for really relaxed cruising.

Must have the GTi-6 and the 306 Turbo D crossed in my head. ...in my defence, we sold a heck of a lot of 306's at the garage, and I test drove a fair number of them!

...Turbo D 306 was still mind bendingly quick for an oil burner in its day though I reckon.

People have successfully fitted an HDI box to an XUD. I think you need to swap some stuff over from the BE3, but it gives you slightly taller gearing from what I gather.

Would need a diesel based transmission but it would work quite well I suspect. Swapping stuff over from the BE3 I think is just the release mechanism as HDi's (RHD ones at least) tend to be hydraulic rather than cable operated.

The steering lock angles on a 306 GTi6 are terrible in my opinion :( , the length of the box means they had to reduce the steering lock limit quite a bit, it can be quite difficult to parallel park one in a tight space.
