but.. really struggling to get an measurements of the cylinder liners.. will try again tomorrow..

also there are some minor rings in the head..
still looking like it may not go again reliably.. only30K miles too !
Sorry I missed this, the head is toast, the engine has been overheated and anealed the head, its gone soft and the compression seals have pushed into it, it will just happen again and cause hgf, sorry should of read your posts through, be very carefully the block hasn't softened and the liners have dropped also. This is why you must retro fit a coolant level sensor, its lack of coolant that kills the hg and if repeatedly over heated the rest of the engine, I personally would junk the engine and get a good second hand unit, fit a be head gasket and make sure there areno signs of overheating while your at it.

Again sorry didn't reply sooner and its not good news

That's the speed some people would like their car worked on, when it's in the garage being serviced or repaired.

thanks Dean / all

head went today to the engineer.. I think it will be ok.. his most common skim, the K series, I asked him how bad the fire ring depression gets.. 1mm ! was the worst he's seen.. (junked)
Mine is more like 0.05 .. its going to be ok .. ;) - I see no signs of overheat, all I see is a failed original gasket..
I am going for it..

car has only gone 30K, head dismantled and mostly through the parts washer..

watch this space ;)

Ive had 1mm easy, that was dead, .05 should be ok But it's still gone soft, they can put hardened steel seats into the head if they get real bad and you don't want to replace, good luck with it and make sure the Coolant vent ball valve is clean and opening as it should!

I like xud's .. you get a massive 10 meter thick repair gasket. Lose a fraction of compression and do a few more million miles ;)

Surely you would have to massively cook the head for it to be annealed?

And its certainly not to anneal the honeycombe of alloy that is the K series head, trouble usually is the air bleed valve gets gummed, you loose compression into thewater jacket which air locks as the engine is usually higher than the rad, and its goodnight.

going for a multi layer gasket but a bit nervous about it really.. engineer said its fine, even gasket instructions say the liner protrusion should be 0.00mm >
I have 0.04 - 0.05 as best as I can measure..
