Semi of fully synthetic oil??

Post by Timmo »

Affternoon all, sitting here pondering on doing an oil and filter change to the Big Ol' Bus, has only done 4k between mot's and this year i didn't do it for the test, - no emissions issues etc. But i was nosing about at what oils and where to get them and couldn't decide to go fully synthetic or Semi??
is it going to make much difference on the car or is it going to go black with in a millisecond of starting and make no difference at all???? ;-)

Semi, or even normal mineral oil in yours, if it's a 1.9TD. Asda do a to-spec one, that's very cheap for 5 litres. It's the one in the black container!

Buy the ECP oil, in fact buy two, wait a week or so, sell it on eBay for a profit and use the cheapo Asda stuff. I'm not sure of the benefit of fully synth if you're only keeping it in 4k miles or so.

Hahhaa! I have often thought of that! ;-) the last oil I put in was the halfords semi when it was on offer before the mot Last year, I'm kinda in 2 minds if it needs an oil change as doesnt do a great deal of miles etc. Just slipped out of the day before MOT oil and filter change this year! ;-)

When you ask this question, you'll likely get a lot of different opinions. I do 3k oil changes, as is recommended for a veg user. The first XUD I got at 100k. Asda were doing a clearance on their diesel mineral oil at 50ppl, so I bought a trolly load of the stuff. I dismantled this engine a couple of months back when it was on 147k. The internals were spotless and in fantastic condition. Indeed it was very much cleaner than another one I was also dismantling at 99k which I assume had been on standard service intervals. I have come to the conclusion that how often you change the oil is far more important than the oil actually used (provided it is the correct specification).

i think fully sinthetic is way overkill for a 1.9TD,

also it would only be beneficial if it were used from new/all the engines life,

i would say use semi and universal, not dedicated diesel oil

At 4k services it shouldn't really matter as log as it meets spec.

I use the cheap stuff from halfords but I do services every 6k and that stuff is £10 for 4litres.

The stuff that comes out goes back into the fuel tank and then once the tank is done the fuel filter is swapped out :) job done and 4litres of fuel into the mix :)

Dedicated diesel stuff is good even for the short intervals as it holds onto the soot which helps in any diesel. With veg and other thicker fuels bore wash is a big issue on direct injection engines but in our xud's the ore combustion chamber avoids all this :)

My Xantia HDi gets an oil change twice a year, even though I'm only doing about 6k a year at the moment. Usually Asda's own semi, unless a branded product is on offer.
