XUD Piston Rings

Post by evilally »

I'm rebuilding an XUD at the moment (although not due to any mechanical failure). When I got the car it had a 100k on the clock, and then I've done 45k on veg, with oil changes every 3k. I've had the Old Man round to inspect the internals and overall he was very impressed with the condition of the engine. Pattern part piston rings seem to be hit and miss quality wise, and OE rings are £200 a set  Old Man advises to clean up and refit with existing rings, just make sure to use the same piston/cylinder/ring combination. Also some places are advising that there's no point in new rings without getting the cylinder bores done as well which would hike costs up even further. Does it seem reasonable to refit existing rings?

Yes don't swap parts between bores, just asking for trouble doing that.

The original rings are high quality, given that the XUD can do 400K without too much trouble if not a lot more*, I'm tempted to say keep them. Petrol XU's seem to want rings at 150K if not less.

Replacing rings it would make sense to hone (or at least clean up) the bores a bit though that is sensible if changing them.

Engine building is beyond my area though.

*There's one that's apparently on 900K somewhere but I don't have proof its genuine.

That's what I'm thinking Andy, comparatively low mileage and lots of life left yet I would have thought. I'll get out to the man cave tonight and starting cleaning and refitting.
