the price for that V6 is fair enough, its not great but not wide of the mark either, the 106 though is just a stupid price imo!

I can't help thinking that next month I'm going to be spending some time working out the best deal for me... Not something I'm looking forward to. Just to add to the pain I may well have to declare my health and knowing the grabbing buggers that'll put the cost up as well

I can see one car at least going on SORN...
You might well get classic cover for the XM, certainly by some companies. Also some companies are more picky about LPG than others.

We have a couple of classic policies for the two oldies. Still, the 2cv costs around £500 a year for all four of us to be on as named drivers. That is a bit more than I would expect for a tin snail! The C1 costs the same, again for the four of us.

Its not a cheap game this insurance thing. Maybe if you do go the SORN route you could alternate between two cars every six months? That way it works out well with the road tax and your only insuring one of the two cars.

Is admiral multi-car the cheapest way to insure your daughters cars? They might well get cheaper from other places, especially ones who do the limited miles/time restrictions/black box things etc. Putting their cars on their own policy, maybe with their mum on the policy, would reduce things?

I can confirm you can get a classic policy on the XM but from memory i think it was limited to 6k a year which is fine for me, was under £200 fully comp, i think it was with footman james but not 100% on that, it was a while ago i got the quote from a local broker.

Mine is around the £550 mark comprehensive for the XM, a little less for the Xantia. As I'm a tight sod I alternate the cars. XM in the warmer months and Xantia in the colder ones. GSA is around £480 comprehensive but it was a sod as only a couple of companies would recognise it (I think there's a grand total of two GSA Club hatches insured in the UK  )

Classic on the XM it will be then. 6K is more than adequate. Barely done that in the Activa this year...

Don't start me on insurance  , Ive had the renewal come today for the Zx16v from Lancaster , it's gone from £325 last year on a restricted mileage agreed policy to £543 and a normal policy with no agreed value . After ringing Lancaster I was told that was the best price so I told them I was going to cancel it . After ringing numerous companies refusing to cover the Zx as it wasn't old enough I got a decentish quote from Adrian Flux of £335 for an agreed value . It really miffs me when I know people are insuring sh***y mk2 escorts for next to nothing and getting ridiculous agreed valuations too for them . There's less than 20 Zx16's left on the road now and I can't believe what a nightmare it can be trying to make sure your covered if the worst was ever to happen .

Gosh Mark, that's shocking in the extreme...

You'd have thought that for cherished cars the risk is low enough that premiums could be really good. You're right, something old but still quite perky, say a MK2 Jag, can be stupidly cheap to insure on a classic policy. I see no fundamental difference between your car and that Jag at all. Both rare, both cherished and both not used as daily drivers. Therefore, both should attract a similar premium.

Against that background I'm even less looking forward to striking a good deal when my policy is up for renewal...

Yes My dad insuresz his Stag fully comp with euro breakdown cover, agreed valuation and me as a named driver for £180ish a year with no mileage cap, he uses it for going to and from work doing about 10k a year! where is the sense in that? this insurance thing doesnt seem to make much sense to me at least, mind you, i got a quote from AXA today and they have quoted me £358 to insure the Activa fully comp with guaranteed no claims etc etc etc so thats very good, of course at the same time i got a quote for £9978.63, madness.

Those of you with more than one car, do you start with zero no claims on a new policy and gradually build up, or do some companies do introductory discounts and offer a year or two? Do classic policies also have no claims bonus arrangements?

I have one car at the moment, but I can foresee getting a small one using less fuel and next to no tax, but keeping the Xantia (HDI) for when it's occasionally needed

I could temporarily add a car to my current policy, which though steep pro rata would be ok for a defined trip somewhere, but only for up to 30 days total per year

And if someone suggests multi-car policy, I did a quote with Admiral for the single car, and its £552 was almost double the £288 I'm paying.

My wife has two cars insured on a multicar policy with aviva , she's been with them for two years and have been very competitive . If you want to get an agreed value on something fairly modern 1990's stuff it can get very frustrating as some companies won't even give a price . Adrian flux have been pretty good for my Zx16v on a agreed value policy .

I struggle to believe the prices some ppl are quoted for insurance. My pug 107 is due in 4 weeks, renewal quote came in at £144. 10 mins on confused and that came down to £112. Thats for myself and wife, both 49, both clear of claims and convictions, I'm declared diabetic, 20000 miles per year, and no voluntary excess. Wifes mini diesel I think was £180ish. Even when I put my 18yo son on it quote is £556. Dont think I have ever paid over £250 for insurance. IIRC the old C5 2.2hdi was £235 the last time I insured it.

The problem with the multiquote sites confused etc are I cannot put my occupation in as it does not fall into any of the few choices listed. I have to try both "Independent Means" and then I tried "Full time employment" but there was little difference.

I suspect its some kind of postcode hike, I actually tried to get a quote for my parents 02 Micra, just out of interest (no reg just the correct model and no I'm not having a Micra no way) and that was 600+ too.

a lot of it comes down to the car driven, area lived in, cost of repairs to other vehicles due to the drivers etc. if you r driving a car popular with the Yoofs, then expect a big premium,
Both our cars on on a multicar, the fiat which is the wifes, on S,D,P+C and Business use, and the xantia is on a std policy, fully comp, screen cover etc. parked offroad on the drive, (coincidentally, apon asking the reps a while back, if you keep your car in a garage then your premium will most likely be higher than if not due to them oppertunists loading the car up with the contents of the garage too!!! ) wifes an accountant at the local hospital and i'm a househusband! (they had me down as a Houseman last year!! i wish loL!) £100 excess on both, both as named on each others cars, premium is £620,

the Bx when was last on the road was £340 fully comp, £100 excess, all the bells and whisltes, etc.
since being 19 ive not paid over £400 per year for incsurance!! i even went totally honest with the occupation when i had the 309gti, lady asked if i had any other occupation i could use, seeing as Barman was the Second most Loadable occupation there was, so said Well, if im not working in the pub i'm cleaning cars, Oh, thats the Most loadable occupation, the lady even said being unemployed would be a better option!! nice! Opted for watersports teacher in the end on advice!! seems honsety doesnt always pay hey!!
After All, I am the Cornish one!

Timmo, it just shows what a minefield insurance is. I never realised that about garages or just how occupations are loaded...

Until now I've always escaped with what I thought was a good premium. Maybe cars not popular with the boy racers, a good postcode and a job as a Civil Servant must help.

It still seems utterly crazy to me how what you do to earn a living can have an effect on how much you pay. So I wander what the least loadable occupation is? Retired?
